Joey Chestnut, Kobayashi - Labor Day Hot Dog Eating Contest on Netflix

Kobayashi retired because of health issues. Now he's back.

Weird.

From TMZ:
The timing of the announcement is pretty interesting -- on Tuesday, Major League Eating announced Chestnut was OUT of the Independence Day contest due to an endorsement deal he inked with a rival food company.

Just weeks ago, Kobayashi -- who is 0-3 against Chestnut -- claimed he was retired from competitive eating ... but he explained in a press release there is some unfinished business to attend to before hanging up his gut for good.

"Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time," Kobayashi said on Wednesday. "This rivalry has been brewing for a long time."

Chestnut -- the 16-time Nathan's contest champ with 8-straight hot dog victories -- also weighed in ... saying, "Through all of my years in competitive eating, Kobayashi stands out as my fiercest rival."

"Competing against him pushed me to be so much better. I know that fans have waited a long time for another chapter of our rivalry and I can't wait for our massive showdown live on Netflix! It's time to give the people what they want!"
I find this hard to swallow.

I wonder how Major League Eating and the International Federation of Competitive Eating would handle it if a person born male who transitioned to female wanted to compete in women's contests.

Joey Chestnut at the State Fair - Cheese Curds

At noon today at the Wisconsin State Fair, Joey Chestnut, competitive eater extraordinaire, takes on cheese curds.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

The competition will take place at noon Aug. 11 at the Associated Bank Amphitheater at State Fair Park.

Chestnut, of San Jose, California, is the 11-time winner of Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest.

..."Success will need to be earned at The Wisconsin State Fair Cheese Curd Eating Championship,” Major League Eating emcee Sam Barclay said in a statement. “Hand speed will be key, capacity will be a challenge — and every eater’s ability to overcome their dairy tolerance will be put to the ultimate test."

The competition will last 6 minutes. The total prize purse is $4,000.
From Major League Eating:
Major League Eating is proud to partner with Wisconsin State Fair to bring cheese enthusiasts the event of the summer – the inaugural Wisconsin State Fair World Cheese Curd Eating Championship. This event will mark the first time a world record in the cheese curd-eating discipline will be set. Fairgoers and curd nerds alike will rejoice in this gooey goodness, and Major League Eaters from near and far are encouraged to sign up to compete in this history-making event.

The 2018 Wisconsin State Fair, presented by U.S. Cellular, will take place Thursday, Aug. 2 – Sunday, Aug. 12. These 11 days will feature fair favorites like the Giant Slide, Original Cream Puffs, livestock shows in the Case IH Coliseum, flavored milk in the Bucks Milk House and so much more. Although these traditions are must-dos every year, make new traditions this summer with the unique experiences awaiting you at the 2018 Wisconsin State Fair – like the World Cheese Curd Eating Championship.

...Agriculture is not only the backbone of the Wisconsin State Fair, but a cherished tradition. The dairy industry is central in this great state, and this can be seen throughout the Wisconsin State Fair in agriculture exhibits, food products and competitions. Wisconsin cheese has been an agricultural and economic staple since the 1800s. As the #1 producer of cheese in the nation, the dairy industry is a highlight of the Wisconsin State Fair. Home to multiple dairy product competitions, as well as the nation’s largest junior dairy show, Wisconsin State Fair has it all. Whether beer-battered, shredded, grilled or deep-fried, America’s Dairyland is the perfect place for the Cheese Curd Eating Contest of the year. Seriously, no one knows cheese curds like a Wisconsinite.

Who will claim the Wisconsin State Fair World Cheese Curd Eating Championship? Who will walk away with $2,000? Will you be the first woman or man to set a world record in the cheese curd-eating discipline? This is the Wisconsin State Fair World Cheese Curd Eating Championship — at the table or in the crowd, you don’t want to miss it!
Joey Chestnut is ranked first in the world.

On the Fourth of July, he won his 11th title at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest by downing 74 hot dogs and buns in ten minutes.

How many cheese curds can Chestnut consume in six minutes?

From Food & Wine:

“It's going to be way more cheese than I've ever had,” Chestnut told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Apparently, though he’s eaten cheese curds as a part of a record-breaking poutine eating session, he’s never had the Wisconsin specialty in a competition on their own. He said that he’s been chowing down on chopped up mozzarella to practice.

Though the Major League Eating site has a laundry list of official eating records—including things like cheesecake, chili cheese fries, and Philly cheesesteaks—apparently little precedent for cheese curds exists. Still, Chestnut has his goal set: at least a pound of curds per minute. “If I could do eight pounds, I’d be happy,” he was quoted as saying. “Ten pounds would be really tough.”
Eight pounds?

Yikes!

Joey Chestnut - 70 HOT DOGS

American exceptionalism.

Takeru Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut

Since 2007, American Joey Chestnut has held the Yellow Mustard Belt.

I don't want to say it's a lock, but it appears Chestnut will keep the hot dog-eating title. His rival, Takeru Kobayashi from Japan, has not committed to take part in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest this year.

Personally, if Kobayashi really doesn't participate in the 2010 competition, I think it's because he doesn't want to taste defeat again, for the fourth straight year.

From the Associated Press:

The biggest beef in the hot dog eating world between Takeru Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut might have just burned out.

The Japanese Kobayashi is not scheduled to show at this year's July 4 hot dog eating contest in New York. He's won six times — an unprecedented feat.

Major League Eating president Richard Shea claims Kobayashi's contract negotiations broke down this year. But competitors still worry that Kobayashi could make a last-minute entrance.

"It shouldn't make a difference for my game plan," said Chestnut, from San Jose, Calif. "But it's just an annoying little thing to think about. I just have to make sure I'm ready."

Kobayashi ate his way to victory from 2001 to 2006. But starting in 2007, he choked.

Chestnut has won the title for the last three years. In last year's contest, Chestnut scarfed 68 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes — a world record.

Two years ago, Chestnut beat Kobayashi in a five-dog eat off, after they tied at 59 franks each.

...The 95th annual hot dog eating contest will take place in Coney Island, Brooklyn, at 12:40 p.m. Sunday. TV viewers can catch the spectacle on ESPN from noon to 1 p.m.

More, from the New York Daily News:
Is it the Fourth of July without Takeru Kobayashi?

The six-time Nathan's hot-dog eating champion seems to have dropped out of this year's gorge-fest, officials said Monday.

After "an impasse" in negotiations, Kobayashi, 32, failed to commit to taking part in the contest, said Richard Shea, president of Major League Eating.

The 128-pound Kobayashi did not return a message seeking comment.

Dubbed the "Tsunami" for his stomach-churning style of inhaling entire franks in one bite, Kobayashi wowed the crowds in 2001 when he shattered the world record by scarfing down 50 dogs in 12 minutes.

He went on to win every year until 2007, when Joey Chestnut wrestled the mustard-yellow belt from Kobayashi by eating a stunning 66 dogs.

..."There is no other competitor," said Chestnut. "If he doesn't compete, it's a victory for me because I would have scared him away."

I don't trust Kobayashi. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he competes. I think he may be bluffing about sitting out. I think it's likely a strategy meant to mess with Chestnut and throw him off his game. I don't think it'll work, but I think that may be what's going on.

Poor Kobayashi. It's come to this.

Joey Chestnut: THREE-PEAT

From CNN:

Setting a world record, Joey Chestnut won Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Saturday, solidifying himself to many as the greatest gustatory athlete of all time.

For the third straight year, Chestnut beat out his main rival, Takeru Kobayashi. The two lived up to their ravenous reputations. They made quick work of the 17 other eaters, and set personal best scores: Chestnut ate 68 dogs to Kobayashi's 64.5.

The event lasts 10 minutes and the two were keeping pace with each other until the last minute where Chestnut pulled away.

"I've been practicing hard," said Chestnut in an interview with ESPN after the contest. "After the second minute, I knew that my body was cooperating."

Chestnut and Kobayashi are considered the game's best and have different techniques to eating. While Kobayashi has a smooth, effortless approach, Chestnut muscles them down. Late in the competition Chestnut's face turns red and contorts as he drools.

He's got the competition down to a science: grabbing two hot dogs, forcing them into his mouth and taking a minimal number of chews as he gulps them down his throat. He then dips the buns in water and lets them slide right down.

What an athlete!

American Chestnut succeeds in winning the Mustard Yellow Belt again.

What a proud moment for the country!

Champion Joey Chestnut

If it's the Fourth of July, it's Nathan's hot dog-eating contest.

Last year, American Joey Chestnut took the title from Japan's Takeru Tsunami" Kobayashi.

Finally, the Mustard Yellow Belt was back in America.

The rematch between Chestnut and Kobayashi was one for the ages.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- World-record holder and defending champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut held on to his hot dog-eating title Friday in an unprecedented tie-breaker at Nathan's Famous Fourth of July contest.

Chestnut, of San Jose, California, beat rival Takeru "The Tsunami" Kobayashi, of Japan, in a "dog off" in Coney Island where the two contestants battled to see who could finish five hot dogs first.

Chestnut and Kobayashi tied in the regulation competition, both eating 59 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, a record for a 10-minute competition.

"It was a little messier than I wanted it to be, but I got them in me and I got them down," Chestnut said after the competition.

The event was broadcast live on ESPN.

Watching people shove hot dogs down their throats as fast as they can for ten minutes isn't very appetizing, but I was happy that Chestnut retained the title.

America can be proud.

Hot Dog Champion Joey Chestnut

Sorry, six-time defending champion Takeru Kobayashi.

Your reign is over.

After downing 66 hot dogs during the championship hot dog eating competition at Nathan's in Coney Island, Joey Chestnut wears the Mustard Yellow Belt now and holds the world record.

It's a great day for America.
