Slavery Not Something That Happened to One Race of People in One Country

THOMAS SOWELL: Slavery has been a universal institution for thousands of years, as far back as you can trace human history. And what we're looking at is as if slavery is something that happened to one race of people in one country, when in fact the spread of it was around the world.
In 1776, which is when Adam Smith published The Wealth of Nations, as well as when the United States got started, he said that Western Europe is the only place in the world where there is no slavery. And even the Western Europeans had vast numbers of slaves in the Western hemisphere but not in Western Europe itself.
And so if you're going to have reparations for slavery, it's going to be the greatest transfer of wealth back and forth, because the number of Whites, for example, who were enslaved in North Africa by the Barbary Pirates exceeded the number of Africans enslaved in the United States and in the American colonies before that put together. But nobody is going to North Africa to ask for reparations because nobody is going to be fool enough to give it to them.

The truth matters.

XINJIANG, CHINA — Thanks to the recent uptick in awareness of worldwide injustices and inequalities, Uighur slaves are struggling to keep up with the demand for more Palestinian headscarves.
The traditional keffiyeh is the square cotton scarf that is being worn on liberal college campuses around the United States in solidarity with the Free Palestine resistance movement. Unfortunately, those headscarves aren't affordable to poor college students unless the manufacturing is outsourced to Uighur slaves in China.
"We are really glad that college kids are paying attention to unfair and oppressive conditions around the world," said one Uighur, Aygul Ablet, through her prison bars to a translator. "It's certainly increased our workload, but it's all for a good cause I guess."

During an appearance on Maher’s “Club Random Podcast,” Mellencamp revealed he wrote a song called “From the Cotton Field to the Playing Fields” that he never recorded because he believed it was “wrong.”
The song’s message was an attempt to show how white people love to have black entertainers and often exploit them.
“I would say that the playing fields are a lot better than the cotton fields,” Maher said 29 minutes into the interview.
“That’s what I would say about that. Maybe I’m crazy, John, but it seems like making no money as a slave picking cotton — it was not as good as playing left field for the Yankees.”
As Maher attempted to continue his argument, Mellencamp interjected and said there is “no doubt” that “1 or 2% of black people” in America “have a better life.”
“Oh, stop, that’s what you think?” Maher responded.
“1 or 2%?”
“OK, let’s say 10%. I just pulled a number out of my a–,” Mellencamp said.
Maher then told Mellencamp that is where his opinion “belongs.”
Mellencamp again said he had pulled the number out of thin air when Maher said his claim was “just not true.”

Democrats/Marxists/Leftists like John Mellencamp lose all credibility when they pull numbers out of thin air. But they keep doing it, stating made-up statistics as facts.
It's pretty funny.
