McCain, Obama, and Experience

Remember during the primaries when Hillary Clinton said over and over again that she, unlike Barack Obama, would be "ready on day one"?

Hillary made the case that Obama lacked the experience necessary to be the president.

At the time Joe Biden agreed. He said Obama was not ready to be president because the "presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training."

The experience issue has taken a back seat in this election, I think mainly due to the magnitude of the economic meltdown.

That's a mistake.

Experience matters tremendously.

I agree with Patrick McIlheran's arguments and conclusion in his column, "For president, I'd go with the experience."

McIlheran writes:

I'll put it simply: Judgment is formed by experience. Obama has little and asks us to trust him anyhow.

McCain, by contrast, has a record you can judge. In 25 years of being in Washington but usually not of it, he's shown an inclination toward free markets, a regrettable soft spot for regulation, an admiration for personal responsibility and a solid conviction that if America's going to talk softly, it ought to not just carry a big stick but be clear about using it.

All true and convincing, say my doubting friends - until he showed poor judgment via Sarah Palin. How-.....-why-.....-?

How and why what? It's telling that many pundits say Palin's wrongness is self-evident. That way, they don't need to try to explain it.

The reality is that Palin won over the Republican base that never trusted McCain. None of the boring alternatives to her could have done this. Her choice was political, but it was a political necessity for McCain.

The rational argument against her is that she's unready, raw. She has merely two years' experience as governor - though during it, she defeated her own party's corrupt establishment, fixed a bad pipeline deal, passed bipartisan ethics reform and held an 82% approval rating this year. This suggests skill as an executive, and anyhow, she's got exactly the foreign policy résumé of previous ambitious governors, such as a smooth talker from Arkansas.

...In any event, Palin's immediate readiness is a question only if you assume McCain will drop dead by February. Obama's utter lack of executive experience starts mattering on Jan. 20. The fact is, the man has none.

I am so sick of the warnings of McCain's imminent death. How lame!

I am so sick of hearing Leftists talk about Palin's lack of accomplishments, constantly belittling her experience.

If Palin were a Democrat and Obama had selected her to be his running mate, Palin would be heralded as a super woman, a goddess at the side of Obama the messiah. There would be no doubts about her qualifications and there certainly would be no doubts about Obama's judgment in selecting her.

Picture the mainstream media drooling over Palin:

Palin brings executive experience to the ticket.

Palin and Obama have the youth and vigor to excite a new generation of Americans.

Palin is a courageous pioneer ready to take on a new frontier.

Obama's choice of running mate was a brilliant move.

Obama has tapped into the future of American politics by picking a strong woman.

Obama and Palin are the faces of change.

No, Obama's judgment wouldn't be questioned and neither would Palin's readiness.

The fact is the Dems and their media accomplices saw what a threat Palin posed so they set out to destroy her and simultaneously hit McCain for choosing such a loser, a two-pronged attack.

As McIlheran points out, Obama's judgment has time and again been shown to be disastrous.

In the past,
Biden questioned both Obama's judgment and his experience.

Senate Foreign Relations Chairman and presidential candidate Joe Biden has joined the gang piling on Barack Obama for proposing possible intervention in Pakistan to pursue Al Qaeda -- using the same word Hillary Clinton used to criticize Obama's eagerness to negotiate with dictators: naïve.

In an interview on The Diane Rehm Show this morning, Biden told guest host Susan Page of USA Today the following:

"… in order to look tough, he's undermined his ability to be tough, were he president. Because if you're going to go into Pakistan -- which is already our policy by the way, if there's actionable intelligence -- you need actionable intelligence from moderates within Pakistan working with you. Now if you're already going to say I'm going to disregard whatever the country thinks and going to invade, the likelihood you're getting the cooperation you need evaporates. It's a well intended notion he has, but it's a very naïve way of figuring out how you're going to conduct foreign policy."

Discussion of Obama's naïveté on foreign policy came to the fore on July 23, 2007, during the YouTube Debate.

QUESTION: "[W]ould you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?"

OBAMA: "I would. And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them -- which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration - is ridiculous."

Not good.

Bottom line: Obama isn't ready.

That's so obvious that even Biden, the guy who thinks "jobs" is a 3-letter word, knows it.

There's nothing Obama can do to change that. He can't buy experience. It can't be produced in an infomercial. All the Greek columns in the world won't help.

McCain has it. Obama doesn't.

If the woefully inexperienced Obama does become the next president of the United States, I think we would be wise to follow Joe Biden's advice: "Gird your loins."

It's going to be a bumpy ride.

Obama is already lowering expectations for his Presidency. He knows he doesn't have a clue nor the experience to deal with any of this mess.

"SARASOTA, Fla. - Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said Thursday that the economy would get worse before it got better no matter who was elected president, telling NBC News that the next administration was likely to inherit a “significant recession.”

In an interview on “NBC Nightly News,” Obama said, “I don’t think there’s any doubt” that the next president will have a tougher job than ever, because it is not possible to forecast how long the economic downturn could last.

“We know that the next president is likely to inherit a significant recession,” Obama told Brian Williams, anchor of “NBC Nightly News.” “We don’t know yet how long and how deep it is, and what actions we take over the next six to nine months could help determine how deep and how long.”

Oh Palin poses a threat alright. She's a Conservative Christian against choice, wants to teach creationism and abstinence-only in our schools, and deosn't believe in equal civil rights for homosexual couples. As we have found out more about her, it seems she represents the worst in politics: When given power she abuses it for personal gain (see Troopergate investigation report), has misrepresented herself(see Bridge to Nowhere and Pipeline project)and charged the taxpayers to cover her children's travel with her on state business to which they were invited/involved and to pay a per diem for days she was staying in her home rather than a hotel.

But the biggest reason Palin is a threat is that beneath the folksy veneer she is nasty ("one part high school bitchy") and has a lack of knowledge and insight. This is captured perfectly in the mocking comments she made about fruit fly research. She doesn't have a clue..... and I don't think she even realizes it. And THAT'S a scary thing

No, if she were the Democratic pick, we would not be all ga-ga over her. Instead, Obama might have even lost some of us to McCain, just as McCain has lost Republicans because of his poor decision to pick her.

You clearly need to stop drinking the kool-Aide. If Palin were a Democrat she would be constantly wailed on for being inexpierenced. She is stupid, she is not ready for office, and not ready to be Vice-President. She has no understanding of foreign policy, she has no understanding of national issues, she is the one who needs on the job training.

Bad arguments Mary.

Regarding the YouTube debate, Obama is absolutely correct in stressing the importance of sitting down and talking (without pre-conditions) with our adversaries. It is not just Obama that sees this, but many other leaders in Washington and abroad. Diplomacy is something that America has failed at under Bush and it has hurt us. We have lost the respect of other nations, endangered American lives and generally made a mess of things or failed to help other countries.

And as for Palin winning the Republican Christian Conservative base over to McCain.... big deal. They would have voted Republican anyway. Who he should have picked if he wanted to win, was someone with strength on the economy (where he is weak) or a strong, smart, moderate woman who could bring him the Hillary vote. It was foolish of him and the GOP to think that woman who had supported Hillary would flock to Sarh Palin. And it was belittling to woman. Most are smart enough to know it take more than lipstick and high heels.

It's false to say that Palin has no understanding of foreign policy and national issues.

With all due respect, that's an idiotic statement.

It reminds me of something Joe Biden would say.

This notion that Bush hasn't engaged in diplomacy during his two terms as president is ridiculous. It's a myth.

And it was hardly belittling to women for McCain to choose a gifted, accomplished woman like Palin to be his running mate.

You don't get her popularity among conservative women nor do you grasp the degree to which her candidacy has energized us.

Mary, I have a PHD in International Relations, American Diplomacy, Security and Ethnic Conflict. I am a big fan of John McCains, and have met, and had the time to talk to Sarah Palin. She does not understand international relations. She has no knowledge of it, is unable to comprehend the difference between Shia and Sunni Muslims. She does not belong anywhere near decisions of critical importance right now. As a military veteran, I also do not want her in charge of the military because she just does not understand. She does not see the issues that affect this country. I would vote John McCain, but Sarah Palin will never get my support or vote. I may not agree with him but Joe Biden at least understands the policies and is intelligent about it. Obama at least has been educated on the area. She has never been, never will be. I cannot emphasize how much she does not understand. She does not understand, and this would be on the job training, Obama's would not be.

Really? You have a "PHD"?

If you do have a Ph.D. and you're so connected that you have talked to Palin, I'm sure you would have no problem identifying yourself.

The onus is on you to prove your credibility.

You won't because you're a liar.

You're a joke. The fact that you would pose like this is pathetic.

Your desperation is showing.

Comment 25: Sarah P.

The internal campaign idea, Obama campaign, is to twist, distort, humiliate, and finally dispirit you. We pay people and organize people to go on all the online sites and play the part of a Clinton or McCain supporter who just switched our support for Obama. We do this to stifle your motivation, to destroy your confidence.

It's not working.

You do know that it's illegal to impersonate someone on the Internet, right?

I find it stunning that an assistant professor would make this statement:

Obama at least has been educated on the area. She has never been, never will be. I cannot emphasize how much she does not understand.

Sorry. I can't believe that an individual with a Ph.D. and a professional reputation to protect would say something so utterly ridiculous and then attach his name to the comments.

Mary, actually YOU need to educate YOURSELF. Palin does in fact support abstinence-only sex education.

Just as she does not believe in equal rights for all.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I totally "get" her popularity with conservative women.

The inmates will be running the Asylum come this January - if there is anything left of the country by then. For goodness sake, Obama is going to have Rohm Emanuel as Chief of Staff and John Podesta and his transition chief. CHANGE my arse.

I'd suggest getting back in the market when the Dow hits 6,000. But plan on no less than six to eight years of investment time to make any money. If you are retiring now or in the next six to eight years you are screwed, unless you are 100% in cash and have enough to cover the coming 7-10% inflation that will rear its ugly head about the end of 2010. But, if you are retiring soon without a lot of income, don't worry. Obama, with this earnings redistribution plan, is going to send you about $500 per year so that should cover your annual living expenses. Forget about selling your house. It'll be worth 50% of what it was worth just a year or to ago.

Too bad enough people don't remember the Jimmy Carter years of pain. Between Obama and the international financial meltdown we just don't have a chance. Google news "layoffs" and one can easily see that thousands and thousands are losing their jobs every week in anticipation of an Obama Presidency.

When the commercial real estate market mess and the credit card debt mess come into view things are going to even get more ugly. The light at the end of the tunnel is a train.

We are so screwed. Well, at least those that don't have a big savings account or a government job and live from paycheck to paycheck are screwed; you know, a lot of Obama voters.

Mary said...

I agree. If Obama wins, we are so screwed. It will take years to undo the damage.

Anonymous said...

You're right! It WILL take years to undo the damage that 8 years of Bush have left us with. Financial deregulation and the war in Iraq have left us in a mess. It would not be an easy time no matter who is to be President. But better Obama than putting our economy back in the hands of the GOP and a president and VP who understand little about the economy.
