Charles Woodson: MVP

Congratulations, Charles Woodson!

Cornerback Charles Woodson of the Green Bay Packers was named the Associated Press National Football League Defensive Player of the Year.

Woodson joins late defensive end Reggie White (1998) to win the award, which has been given out for 36 years, as a Packer.

Woodson won the voting of 50 national media members that cover the NFL with 28 votes. New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis finished second with 14. Denver Broncos end Elvis Dumervil and New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper tied for third with three votes. Vikings end Jared Allen received two.

Woodson, 33, reached new heights in his 12th season -- fourth as a Packer -- in part due to his versatility in coordinator Dom Caper's new 3-4 defense. Woodson is the third player coached by Capers to win the award. Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Rod Woodson (1993) and Miami Dolphins outside linebacker Jason Taylor (2006) were the others.

...A year ago the Packers finished 22nd in total defense. They were No. 2 this season.

Woodson finished tied for the league lead with nine interceptions and three returned for a touchdown. Hebecame the fourth player in league history to record at least nine interceptions and two sacks in a season.
