Apolo Ohno - 7

Apolo Ohno has won more medals in the Winter Olympics than any other American athlete.

Saturday night, he broke the record held by speed skater and all-around terrific person Bonnie Blair.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - With a late move from last place after nearly tumbling over, Apolo Anton Ohno won bronze in the 1,000-meter short track final, breaking a tie with Bonnie Blair as the winningest U.S. Winter Olympian.

Ohno has seven career medals including a silver in the 1,500 from these Games.

South Korea's Lee Jung-su won the gold and countryman Lee Ho-suk took the silver.

"In my head I thought the race was mine," Ohno said afterward.

With two laps to go and bunched up in the five-man field, Ohno came close to wiping out before regained his footing.

...Blair won five golds and one bronze medal in four Olympic Winter Games: 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1994. Blair attended Saturday's races at Pacific Coliseum.

"I'm very happy for Apolo's accomplishment," she said in a statement released through the U.S. Olympic Committee. "It's a great feat for him, US Speedskating, and the United States of America. We hope that more kids will see his accomplishments and want to try our great sport that has been so good to us and taught us so much about what it takes to be successful in life."

It was remarkable that Ohno managed to get the bronze. The fact that he could move from last to third is testament to Ohno's skill and strength and determination.

Seven Olympic medals is an enormous accomplishment.

Congratulations, Apolo!

Not to take anything away from Apolo, but I don't think he should be called the greatest American Winter Olympic athlete of all time.

Without question, he's one of the all-time greats. He's the winningest ever. Absolutely.

But Bonnie Blair has five gold. Are Bonnie's five gold medals more impressive than Apolo's two gold medals?

What about Eric Heiden's amazing feat -- winning ALL the men's speed skating races, getting five gold medals, at the Lake Placid Games?

I think it's a silly debate.

Eric Heiden, Bonnie Blair, and Apolo Ohno --

They've each achieved amazing things on Olympic ice. They're all great.
