This seems like a ploy by Lorne Michaels to hype the show.
The Saturday Night Live cast is so enormous the entire cast never gets to appear. Unless most walked off the show, it wouldn't be noticed.
What's so controversial about Elon Musk? Sure, the guy is strange, saying we live in a simulation. And his acting ability is awful, as his work on Rick and Morty shows.
He's rich and eccentric. So what?
According to the New York Post, no cast members have pulled out.

Musk will join the cast for rehearsals at 30 Rock beginning on Tuesday.
No cast members have pulled out of the show yet, we’re told. The source added: “Whether you like him or not, Elon is a very interesting character. … He’s very much a showman.”

Just hype.
