Cardinal Dolan: Celebrate Christmas Until the Epiphany

Cardinal Dolan writes: Christmas Isn't Over Yet
Just a warning: I will be driving around the Archdiocese today. If I see one Catholic home, with the Christmas Tree taken down already, outside near the trash can, I’m coming in and cursing your New Year!

We Catholics celebrate Christmas until the Epiphany, the Sunday after New Year.

People complain – – and rightly so – – that we start to celebrate Christmas way too early, usually in mid-November, and no longer take Advent seriously. They’ve got a point.

I gripe because we stop celebrating Christmas too early! Keep the tree up; keep the carols going; keep the lights on; keep wishing Christmas greetings; keep the crib up . . . until Epiphany!
It really bothers me when I see Christmas trees tossed to the curb within 24 hours after Christmas Day.

It's possible people have travel plans and need to take down the tree before leaving for weeks. There are reasons to remove a Christmas tree soon after the 25th, like it's become so dried out that it's a danger to keep inside. But most of the early enders are just ready to move on as fast as they can.

Without question, ending the Christmas season on the 26th is becoming more prevalent. People are sick of hearing Christmas songs. They're sick of the decorations. They want it to all be over.

In fact, the Christmas season is just beginning. We have twelve days of celebration. The people ending Christmas after its first day aren't really celebrating Christmas.
