The man who was killed by police in Madison, Wisconsin, a shocking caught-on-camera shooting — sparking protests — was a violent ex-con with a lengthy record, including for assaulting cops, The Post can reveal. Corey Durrell Ruiz, 38, was identified by local officials and his family in social media posts. ...Ruiz had recently been released from prison, and had knifed a cop moments before he was fatally shot, according to authorities. Prison records show that Ruiz was Hispanic, and not black — though court records listed him as African-American. Online court records show at least 25 criminal cases dating back to 2007. In 2023, he was convicted of battery to a law enforcement officer and resisting a law enforcement officer. He most recently was convicted in 2025 of retail theft and resisting police. ...He was released from prison in May of this year and was listed as having absconded from supervised release.
