Captain Smit Machchhar and the brave passengers aboard Flydubai Flight 1073 who came to his aid are heroes. They prevented fatalities in a horrific situation."To be honest, I was not very sure I would make it out alive." The flydubai captain who survived a midair hijacking attempt is breaking his silence, revealing terrifying new details about how his own co-pilot attacked him with an axe as the aircraft's engines began powering down. Captain Smit Machchhar says the attack came without warning, moments after his co-pilot asked to pray. He initially thought something was wrong with the aircraft before he realized he'd been struck in the head. Trapped in his seatbelt, he desperately tried to fend off the blows as he heard the engines spooling down. He says at one point he even lost consciousness. "Did I give up? No. I can 100% tell you I did not give up." The suspect, an Omani national, is accused of attempting to seize control of the aircraft and crash it into a terminal at Israel's Ben Gurion Airport.
