UPDATE, October 15, 2008: Rights leader sentenced to 15 years for incest
A top lieutenant to Martin Luther King Jr. was sentenced Wednesday in a Virginia court to 15 years in prison for incest for having sex with his teenage daughter._________________
The Rev. James L. Bevel was a key architect of the 1963 Children's Crusade in Birmingham, Ala., and other pivotal moments of the civil rights movement. He was convicted after a four-day trial earlier this year in Loudoun County Circuit Court.
The prison sentence was the most severe the judge could impose. Sentencing guidelines called for a term of probation and the jury that convicted Bevel recommended the 15-year sentence.
Bevel, 71, took the stand during the sentencing hearing and revealed that he was recently diagnosed with end-stage pancreatic cancer and that doctors estimate he has six weeks to six months to live. A prosecutor said that was unfortunate but that Bevel deserved the sentence.
During the trial, Bevel's daughter testified that she was repeatedly molested by Bevel beginning when she was just 6 years old, culminating in sexual intercourse in 1993 or 1994 that formed the basis of the incest charge.
UPDATE, April 10, 2008: Civil rights leader convicted of incest

UPDATE, April 7, 2008:
LEESBURG, Va. -- A daughter of a civil rights icon who served as a top lieutenant to Martin Luther King Jr. testified Monday that her father regularly molested her beginning when she was 6 years old.
The Rev. James L. Bevel pleaded not guilty to a charge of incest before jury selection began Monday. Prosecutors have said he had sex with a teenage daughter years ago, and told her the sex was part of religious training.
The daughter testified she grew up in a communal lifestyle in which she regularly saw her father having sex with women and she came to perceive her own molestation as normal.
She also testified that she and her siblings did not call Bevel "Dad" but instead referred to him as "Rev" or "Jim." She said she told her mother in a written letter that her father was molesting her.
The mother "handed (the letter back) to me and said I spelled 'molest' wrong," the daughter testified.
The Associated Press generally does not identify the victims of sexual abuse. The daughter is one of at least 14 children Bevel has with several different women, according to her testimony on Monday.
...An ex-wife of Bevel testified that he instructed his family and followers in the commune that it was parents' obligation to "sexually orientate" their children — meaning in her mind that they were to have sex with them.
Disgusting.

Is Rev. James L Bevel worthy of his title?
LEESBURG, Va. -- A civil rights leader who worked closely with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has been charged with incest.
The Rev. James L. Bevel, 70, was arrested late last month in Alabama, where he has been living, after being indicted on one count of unlawfully committing fornication.
...According to the indictment, the crime occurred in Loudoun County in northern Virginia between Oct. 14, 1992, and Oct. 14, 1994, when the accuser was 13 to 17 years old.
Bevel, who worked with King and witnessed his assassination in Memphis, Tenn., in 1968, has played a key role in some of the country's major civil rights protests.
He organized the 1963 Children's Crusade in Birmingham, Ala., and was a leader of the Freedom Rides to desegregate public accommodations throughout the South in the early 1960s. And he was an architect of the March on Washington in 1963 and the Selma-to-Montgomery march in Alabama in 1965. He also helped organize the Million Man March in Washington in 1995.
If the charges are true, when Bevel was in his mid-50s, he was abusing a child.
A civil rights icon sexually exploiting a child is serious stuff.
What do the Democrats have to say about this?
Will the press demand that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and other Dem presidential contenders condemn Bevel?
Whenever Pat Robertson says something stupid, the White House is held responsible.
The lib media consistently closely connect the statements of evangelicals with President Bush and the Republican Party.
The press had conniptions when Robertson made his lame comments about assassinating Hugo Chavez.
Robertson, 75, is a founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a supporter of President Bush, who was elected twice with the solid backing of Christian conservatives.
"I would think that people around the world would take the comments for what they are," [State Department spokesman Sean] McCormack said. "They are the expression of one citizen."
Note how the press associated President Bush with Robertson's personal opinion. Caracas responded as if Robertson spoke on behalf of the United States.
Jesse Jackson traveled to Venezuela to meet with Hugo Chavez and addess Venezuela's National Assembly over the matter.
Rev Jackson urged US authorities to take action against Mr Robertson's statements.
"We must choose a civilized policy of rational conversation," he told reporters during his three-day visit to speak at a ceremony.
Rev Jackson later met and shook hands with Mr Chavez during the Venezuelan leader's weekly radio and television programme, the Associated Press reports.
Mr Jackson's visit is a propaganda coup for the Venezuelan president, says the BBC's Justin Webb in Caracas.
Mr Chavez is likely to use the reverend's presence to demand that the White House apologise for Mr Robertson's remarks, our correspondent adds.
All of this resulted from PRIVATE CITIZEN Robertson's comments.
But as the lib media reminded us, Bush was elected on the strength of the Christian Coalition.
OK.
Dem candidates are elected on the strength of the African-American vote.
That's what pushes Hillary Clinton into putting on her fake Southern drawl. She wants to make sure that African-Americans remember that she was the first black First Lady.
Barack Obama is certainly courting the African-American vote, adopting a similar accent. He even said that his conception was a direct result of Selma.
Bevel, of course, was instrumental in the Selma march.
John Edwards, too, wants to win over black America, recently using tool Danny Glover. Rich man Edwards is quick to fall into his poor Southern boy roots routine.
Obviously, Hillary and Obama and Edwards want to have a very close connection with African-Americans and civil rights leaders. That would include the Rev. James L. Bevel.
So let's hold Obama accountable for Bevel's behavior.
Let's insist that Hillary be held responsible for Bevel's allegedly incestuous two year romp with a child.
Let's associate Edwards with Bevel's crime.
That seems fair, doesn't it?

If Jim Bevel is convicted of the charges against him does that mean that we should not acknowledge what he did for the country and the civil rights movements? What does his actions have to do with the democratic party and their views of the African-American community. That would be like tying the current administration to ALL the wrongs of our country.
For the sake of discussion, let's say Bevel is found guilty.
That won't change his role in the civil rights movement. His accomplishments of the past would stand as solidly as his crimes.
Many historical figures have a dark side. Unfortunately, Bevel's would be especially dark.
As far as the Dems and the views of African-Americans go, I don't think they should be held accountable for what Bevel did to a child. They shouldn't have to answer for his heinous behavior.
There's a double standard.
Libs in the media and Dems like to hold ALL Christians and Republicans responsible for the lunacy of Robertson, for example.
I think it's unfair.
Thanks for reinforcing my point.
Actually, for the record, Bevel is a conservative Republican. Check your history and your facts. So, your point is . . .
Let's do a fact check--
Yes, it's true that Bevel was on board with Ronald Reagan, and he once ran for office as a Republican. That was over twenty years ago.
His flirtation with the Republican Party was rather short-lived. By the early 90s, when he allegedly was assaulting a child, he was aligned with Lyndon LaRouche.
He's an ally of Louis Farrakhan.
Sorry. I certainly wouldn't consider Bevel to be a conservative Republican, but that's just me.
Rev. Bevel and I discussed last year of bringing the discussion of sexual perversity, and three other apocalyptic dragons to the International forum for proper discussion. Just as they wrongfully charged the man of God, Lot, in the Bible with incest, they have wrongly charged Rev. Bevel; and let us make no mistake; there is no such thing as UNLAWFUL FORNICATION, all fornication is unlawful.

Perhaps you could provide a link to "The Actual Facts Research & Survival Center."
That would help your credibility.
For my part, I have not convicted Bevel. Note in my post and comments, I make clear that he's alleged to have committed a crime.
If Bevel is wrongly accused and found not guilty, I'll be sure to write about his acquittal.
Mr. Muhammd:
You are in error about what the Bible says about Lot. There is nothing there about his being falsely accused of incest--something rather the reverse. And not a word about accusations. (Genesis 19: 30-38)
If you wish to comment on the Bible, please read it.
As I read... He actively became Republican Party activists...
so why Dem has to say anything about him,,,
As I mentioned in a comment above, I'm aware that Bevel had a BRIEF swing to the Right. His more recent affiliation with Farrakhan hardly makes him a Republican activist.
Anyway, the point of my post, written 10 months ago, is how wrong it is to hold a political party responsible for the deeds of a private citizen.
This issue should not be viewed as anything pertaining to political affiliation. This issue crosses party lines and whoever would make this a Democratic/Republican issue instead of a human dilemma, should rethink their views. This is about protecting innocent children not politics.
I'm afraid the point of my original post (June 9, 2007) wasn't clear.
Yes, it dealt with Bevel and the charges of incest, but the post really wasn't about child abuse and those allegations.
I was addressing a general double standard evident in American politics and the American media. I think it was ridiculous to hold Bush responsible for what Pat Robertson said about Chavez. It's not like Robertson is Bush's spiritual mentor. Bush doesn't attend Robertson's church, yet Dems and their media mouthpieces demanded that the Bush administration be held accountable for Robertson's comments, as if he were an official spokesman for the administration and the U.S. government. Bush should not have to answer for statements made by every evangelical.
I raised that issue and concluded that it would NOT be fair to connect Bevel's alleged crimes with the Dem candidates just because the Dems are supported by the vast majority of African-Americans.
Of course, had the topic of my post been specifically about Bevel's alleged abuse of children, politics would not have been relevant.
This man needs to be hanged (put to death) for what he did, just as my Grandfather should have...for what he did to my Mother. This sin runs throughout a family...and can destroy MANY lives. I am a victim, and I KNOW.
Bevel received his sentence -- 15 years.
He'll die before serving a fraction of it.
"[H]e was recently diagnosed with end-stage pancreatic cancer and that doctors estimate he has six weeks to six months to live."
The sexual exploitation of children is morally reprehensible. I hope all victims of these horrible crimes find healing and peace.
Interview with Helen Bevel
The following is the text from an interview by a person who chooses to remain anonymous and Helen Bevel, the wife of Reverend James Luther Bevel and the mother of Aaralyn Mills. This interview took place during April, 2010.
Interviewer - Good Afternoon. I’m so glad you have agreed to this interview.
Helen Bevel – Well I’m looking forward to it. Thank you for asking.
I – Now, Mrs. Bevel..
H – You can call me Helen
I – Okay, Helen you were married to Reverend James L. Bevel and the two of you had six children is that correct?
H – My late husband and I had five children, three girls and two boys. I had a daughter when I met Bevel.
I – Where you and Rev. Bevel divorced?
H – Yes, however in our tradition divorce like marriage is really just a piece of paper. I mean we were married 13 years before we made it legal in 1981. So the divorce didn’t end our marriage although many people based on the cultural norm believed we did, and acted in that manner.
I – So are you saying that in your tradition marriage is forever even though you may go thru divorce proceedings, other legal marriages, etc.
H – Yes, that is what I am saying. Marriage is an agreement and the agreement does not depend on paper or legal structures. It’s between the parties and God.
I – So what agreement did you and Rev. Bevel have?
H – Well, we agreed that the society as it is is based on a violent foundation which was rooted in the people that make up the society (including ourselves). So the next agreement was that each of us would work to eradicate from our self all aspects of the society and create a new society or system of relationships that is built on being healthy (physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually) and nonviolence.
I – Sounds like this agreement would include many others.
H – Yes, that is true; we further agreed to have children and to raise them to be healthy and nonviolent.
I – So excuse me for my bluntness, but wasn’t Rev. Bevel accused and found guilty of engaging in incest with one of your daughters as a minor? Did that nullify the agreement?
H – I can see how you would come to such a conclusion however, I said the agreement takes into account that we were born in sin and shaped in iniquity or a violent society and that we would work to get the violence out of ourselves. Incest and all sexual perversions are a part of this violent society. I mean no child is born a criminal. Criminal activity is something you learn. It is learned behavior not nature’s plan. Uprooting the particular malady and finding means and methods for doing this is a work in progress.
I – Do you believe that pedophilia or sexual offenders can be rehabilitated. It is a belief in the society that they can’t be healed.
H – Again the violent society has a lot of dead ends that say something can’t be done. Where there is a will there is a way, and whatever the mind of man can conceive, the mind of man can achieve. I believe that a person can be restored to the state of purity and innocence that they came to the planet with and let me add the level of health. And in that I believe this is achievable.
