Republican Debate: The Ron Paul Cult

The Republican presidential wannabes spent this Sunday morning participating in a debate aired live on ABC. It was an exteneded version of This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Naturally, Stephanopoulos moderated the debate.

"Real Americans" asked the questions. The format was reminiscent of the YouTube debate, without the goofiness factor.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but I watched enough to note that whenever Ron Paul said anything the auditorium erupted in cheers.

What did that indicate? It revealed that nearly every person in the country supporting Paul decided to attend that debate.

I definitely prefer a zero tolerance policy when it comes to applause at political debates.

When cheering is not kept in check, the atmosphere becomes more Jerry Springer than serious discussion by presidential candidates.

Although supporters of each candidate applauded with approval after their man spoke, Paul's group seemed disproportionately louder and more obnoxious.

Of course, the Iraq war was addressed. And of course, Ron Paul was utterly clueless. He's even worse than some Democrats on that issue.

When it comes to matters of foreign policy, he's more naive than Barack Obama, and that's saying a lot.

Mitt Romney got in a good line about Obama. It was scripted, not an off-the-cuff remark, but it still was good.

Romney said:

"I mean, in one week he went from saying he's going to sit down, you know, for tea, with our enemies, but then he's going to bomb our allies. I mean, he's gone from Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove in one week."

I wonder if Hillary Clinton's campaign forwarded Romney that line.

Anyway, back to Iraq...

QUESTION: If you were president, what would be your strategy for ending the war in Iraq?

RON PAUL: Just come home. We just marched in, we can just come home. We went in there illegally. We did not declare war. It's lasting way too long. We didn't declare war in Korea or Vietnam. The wars were never really ended. We lose those wars. We're losing this one. We shouldn't be there. We ought to just come home.

Good grief.

He has the depth of understanding of a fifth grader. No, that's being unfair to fifth graders.

He speaks with the wisdom of a drunk in the gutter. No, that's being unfair to drunks.

I think Paul is intoxicated with his cult status. He gives his followers what they want and what they want is sheer lunacy.

"Just come home"?

That's insane. Truly.

Look at ABC's unscientific poll on the winner of the debate.

I'm shocked! Ron Paul ran away with it! The public adores Paul.

He's a real contender to be the nominee.

What a joke!

I would vote for Hillary before I'd cast a vote for Ron Paul.

Thank God it will NEVER come to that. No chance. No way.

LMAO!

It really is the most bizarre phenomenon. I'm surprised I commented here before one of his internet watchers did.

Too funny, the country is broke, the economy is headed for a crash, we cannot afford an empire and those with foresight are a cult? How many of Mitts boys are figthing the war of the generation? ZERO, that job is for your kids. That old horse to water adage applies. This time next year you will be duhh!, I guess that cult had a point.

Obviously, you are so biased that discussion with you is completely useless. Ron Paul shows a depth of understanding of foreign policy you can't even begin to comprehend. It is his adherence to the constitution that REALLY bugs you, isn't it? God knows we can't be restrained by that quaint piece of paper when attacking countries that are of no threat to us.

How ironic. The blog author compares Ron Paul to a 5th grader. A 5th grader could easily win a debate with this author.

BushBots will never get it. That they would throw actual conservatism in the trash and vote for Hillary doesn't surprise me in the least. Neo-cons are more marxist then they are conservative.

As for Iraq, what Dr. Paul said was correct. We are nearly 10 trillion dollars in debt - that is a far more serious national threat issue then Iraq ever was.

When will the neo-cons stop being scared little kids?

Does your mother know you are using her computer?

Get a clue. Get an education. You embarass yourself with your comments.

Well, maybe you are right.

Yeah, you are right, we should kill 500,000 innocent Iraqis in order to make America safe. That is a position a fifth grader can understand.

"He has the depth of understanding of a fifth grader."

Are you sure you are not talking about the Bush administration's understanding? Perhaps it is the morons who marched us until an unneccesary war with Iraq - who did not threaten us nor had WMDs. Bush had Ron Paul's support as well as my support to hunt down Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. Sadly, he used this as an excuse to invade a sovereign nation which did not directly threaten us. I'm angry that my President, who I voted for, abused our support by creating this quagmire. Maybe I'm just one of the RP cult though. PS: I wasn't at Iowa and neither were many of the other RP supporters. Please check your facts

"Just come home."

"Alright let's load em up boys"...and away we go. Simple as that huh? What's the plan after that? Why doesn't anyone ever question Dr. Vagina about that? Do they just cheer and assume everything will work out? At this point I'm almost rooting for Paul or a Lib to win just to see the hypocrisy play out.

Anonymous said...

How about we mind our own business Dave. That is the plan. We stop killing foreigners. We become a decent world citizen. We treat others the way we would like to be treated. How does that sound Dave? Anything wrong with that?

Anonymous said...

Dave you have a point, the problem is that they will not give him the time to answer, He will bring them home in an orderly fashion but he will not let our sons and daughters get picked off policing the streets. You cannot win a police action with thousands of armed militia men ruling the streets unless you decide to kill them, which we are not, its an endless action with catastrophic results, humanitarian wise and financially. The terrorist are bankrupting us. Its obvious to anyone with a pulse the end result is going to be separation and self government for each group anyway, they hate eachother and always will. If not that then endless chaos.

Ron Paul is a threat to your ill-informed world view that you have adopted. Lashing out at him with emotional attacks is just proof that his intellectual arguments really upset you. But who doesn't get upset when someone tries to take away their safety blanket? There is a reason that so many people support Ron Paul. We've been looking for a politician with brains for a long time.

Anonymous said...

"We treat others the way they like to be treated."

That's so very simplistic and naive. I only wish the terrorists would have the same attitudes. "Hey guys come on, can you please stop blowing shit up? We don't like the way you're treating us or the Iraqi civilians. That's soooo not cool." Apparently Al-Qaeda never went to kindergarten and learned the "Golden Rule."

Paul has all the time in the world to explain his plan. I'm sure if he so desired he could post it on his website. I would love to read it.

...and how do you know what's going on over there right now is not working? How do you know it won't work? Why don't we wait until September for the full report like General Petraeus asked? If his report is completely negative and shows no signs of improvement then maybe its time to move on, but until then I'm not satisfied with just giving up.

Dave, be a critical thinker, please.
#1 Kurds,Shia and Sunni will never integrate, they all will not put up with a few Al Quaeda in Iraq, they will kill them themsleves and are.
#2 Pakistan houses the remnants of Al Quaeda and the Taliban and we are giving them billions?
#3 No effort is being made to disarm the militia's , Imagine if the citizens of New Orleans had m16's and rocket launchers.
#4 The Suudi govt asked us to leave our bases there, so the US is obliging and building them in Iraq,(long term). One of the key reasons for the war.(untold)
#5 Even if we wanted to we cannot afford this price tag continuosly without bankrupting the nation and inflating the middle class out of existence
#6 95% of the worlds Heroin is produced in Afghanistan and most of it comes here while our military justs walks on by the farms(drug war?)
I could go on and on but I suspect it will only harden your position and you are one that needs to see for yourself the earth is indeed round instead of flat by sailing to the arctic and freezing to death in the process.

In the context of the geopolitical realities of the Middle East and the history of the region dating back 100 years, can you explain, citing evidence and sources, why Ron Paul is "clueless" in regards to foreign policy?

Thanks.

Christopher, please, Ronald Reagan, the oft quoted hero of the party left Lebanon, yep just marched on out since as he said they are irrational. If he actually answers your question, he will be bashing Ron Reagan? Lebanon is still screwed up and always will be, they would happily elect Hezbollah, like Palestine did Hamas. So much for reason and democracy. The Neocons are abject failures in every regard.

The framers of the US constitution told us to stay out of the affairs of foreign nations, yet we continue to meddle and pay a heavy price.

"speak softly and carry a big stick" seems to be lost on todays sudo-conservatives.

why did the last FEC campaign contributions show that 49.5 % of all the military donations went to Dr. Paul ? are 49.5 % of our military members wackjobs, moonbats or kooks ? no, they just are tired of the nonsense.

"Just come home" is insane? OK, go on, tell me why you feel that way... That's a beginning of a thought, now try real hard and see if you can finish that thought. Or are you just regurgitating the programming you've been given by MSM? If you can't give me a reason "why", then you can do one of 2 things: turn off the tube and try to get your brain back in working order, or just give up on free thinking and return to your scheduled programming.

Do you really think that by staying and fighting them we are gaining ground? To an entire nation we have become the common enemy. Reverse the scenario. What if China had bases here in Florida, Nebraska, and Nevada? What if they had nukes pointed at us from the Mexican border? What if they decided tomorrow that they didn't like the way our state lines were divided and they wanted to combine California and Orgeon because they've always been more "liberally" minded or Texas and Colorado because it just made more sense to them. Suddenly, it would no longer matter who was a democrat or who was a republican, who was christian or who was an aetheist, who was poor or who was rich, because all of a sudden we would just be Americans fighting against the common enemy. That is what is occurring over there and because of it, we will never win. I would much rather leave and leave them to fight amongst themselves than to fight against the sons and daughters of America.

We shouldn't have disrupted what little "control" they had over there in the first place, even if thousands were dying at the hand of their dictator. That's not our business. Now look at it. We made it worse. I don't tell you to wipe from front to back just because I think it's a better way of doing it. Mind your business and I'll mind mine. We shouldn't have gone in under unsure pretenses, or without congressional declaration of war, and become a part of destabilizing that region, regardless of how many thousands of years they've been battling under the name of their religion... no matter how much oil money was at stake, and who cares if they wanted to start trading in Euros instead of dollars. America is bigger than that. America is better than that. We were created by forefathers with a vision of independence, freedom, and example, and built up by the sweat, blood and tears of our families, with a vision of being "better than that", not from preemtive attacks and chaos from barely-believable fear. That's for bullies and losers and the rest of the world knows it. Do you? Strike down those that strike at you, but don't try to inject your infinite wisdom on those who do not request it. I voted for Ronald Reagan, whom I believe to be our last decent President. It's time for a new decent President. Ron Paul is that man. If you're voting Republican, get Ron Paul on the Primaries or expect Hilary/Obama to be our next failure in office.

Christopher,

You knee-jerk neocons remind of all those good obedient Germans who shouted down their more thoughtful neighbors in the early years of the Nazis' power grab. Remember though: they'll shut you up too after their version of the Night of the Long Knives.

Looks like you would vote for Hillary over Gingrich as well? They'll all be singing the same tune and trumpeting the constitution by election time.

Since your position is not well-explained, and since you say that Ron Paul has the understanding of a child, why don't you read some of what Ron Paul writes? He has an entire library of articles he has written on all sorts of political topics, all for free on the Internet at

http://www.ronpaullibrary.org/

Are you intelligent to look at Ron Paul's positions in-depth, or do you rely on only 25 second "sound-bytes" seen in a rigged TV debate?

I'm an Army officer with 26+ years service.

I agree with Ron Paul (a fellow veteran) regarding the war in Iraq.

So count this old soldier as another "naive pacifist", I guess.

I wonder how many years the author served in the military?

Army officer, thank you for your service, the young Republicans do not serve in the armed forces, they are physically disabled from doing so or they would gladly. That you tube interview that asked about 10 of em if they would be willing to go all provided the same excuse, if it was not for their various ailments they would be there in a heartbeat. Knee, back, asthma, etc. Asthma is the biggee. Yale and Marthas Vineyard calls.

Wow Mary, you really brought 'em out of the woodwork, didn't ya! LOL

BTW, I saw some home made signs for Ron Paul outside of Memphis on my way home yesterday. 'REVOLUTION'. They had the 'evol' highlighted so it looked like a backwards 'love'. Odd. And very 60's.

Anonymous said...

I think when you called the author a "cunt bag" is probably when I decided to abandon my beliefs and support Ron Paul. That's sarcasm kids!

You Paul supporters are filled with so much venom its amusing.

Anonymous said...

I do not see much venom here, just one, you can find one in every crowd, but what I do find here is tons of solid questions and facts, an noone disputing them, the original post therfore is drivel, and even Newt agrees now, I mean why else would abc(already been censored) feel the need to edit a debate picture to take one candidate out of it? Thats bizarre. But the sheople need to be led I guess, years of dumbing down the schools system at work.

That's interesting, Kste.

I have another theory. Do you think that the Ron Paul supporters weren't highlighting "love" but were actually trying to highlight "evil" and they don't know how to spell?

Mary said...

"anonymous 2:03 PM, August 06, 2007,"

You don't see much venom? You're blind.

Moreover, your logic is faulty.

I find it interesting, especially going inside the cult, that so many comments refer to the school system as being dumbed down.

I happen to agree that the public school system is a mess.

It's funny. I would have guessed that Paul's supporters were the products of public schools.

(I might address all those "solid questions and facts" in a separate post, rather than debating all these "anonymous" people in this spam job.)

Mary said...

I agree with you, Dave.

It's amusing.

I was very disappointed in what Ron Paul said about the war and about the CIA.

But I had to ask myself, what is most important? What is the greatest threat to America today.

And while sure, terrorism is a threat, and I am not going to deny it, the big threat to America is what is happening within out country.

You have our country allowing corporations with our military secrets to be sold to China. You have this whole immigration thing. You have the NAFTA superhighway.

No, I disagree with about 10 percent of what Ron Paul believes but on the important stuff he is right where he needs to be.

And the truth is that when I saw the debate I saw that he and Tom Tancredo actually cared about America. I looked at the rest of them and thought they don't give a damn about our country.

You said you would vote for Hillary over Ron Paul. Well I would vote for Hillary over Giuliani. Where does that leave us? With Hillary I guess as that seems inevitable.

Ron Paul isn't going to be able to do everything he wants. But he will shake it all up a bit. And that is what we need right now. That is why I am supporting him.
