Bobby Tanzilo writes:
As Milwaukee County's parks turn 100, they are at a crossroads. The so-called "green necklace" that loops the county is universally acknowledged as a regional gem, but with funds for the parks dwindling, it's not hard to see signs of decay.
The decay is not just the result of funding struggles. It's not just a matter of buildings and gardens in disrepair. It's more than upkeep issues and budget cuts.
The parks have decayed in terms of being safe places for county residents to gather, sites to enjoy recreation and nature's beauty.
From CBS 58:
Two 16 year-old boys in Milwaukee have now been arrested after throwing a so-called "Drano bomb" at a couple of detectives from the sheriff's department in Humboldt Park on Saturday.
It's essentially a 20-ounce plastic soda bottle filled with common household materials that react and explode. It may look harmless but investigators say it's no joke. And that had it gone off, someone could have been seriously hurt.
Crime continues to encroach on formally safe areas of the city.
While Milwaukee County Parks once greatly enhanced the quality of life in the area, now they can be a sad reminder of the deterioration of Milwaukee.
