Gov. Jim Doyle's statement

“Lee Dreyfus was one of a kind – one of Wisconsin’s unique personalities. He was both a wonderful governor and education leader. He led us, educated us, entertained us, all at the same time. He showed us that politics do not have to be harsh or overly partisan.

“Over the years I personally benefited from his warm friendship and sage advice.

“Jessica and I, along with all citizens of Wisconsin, offer our deepest condolences to Joyce and the Dreyfus family.

“I am ordering the flags of the United States and of Wisconsin to fly at half staff at all buildings, grounds and military installations of the State of Wisconsin until sunset on the day of the funeral of Lee Sherman Dreyfus.”

RPW Chairman Reince Priebus' Statement

“Today Wisconsin mourns the death of a great governor. Governor Lee Sherman Dreyfus’ strong, charismatic leadership made him popular, and his broad bipartisan appeal remains his legacy. His affable nature was well known, yet he was never afraid to speak out for what he believed. Dreyfus cared deeply for the people of Wisconsin and continued to promote issues he believed in well after leaving office.

I had the great opportunity of meeting the governor and saw first hand how warm and encouraging he could be; how supportive he was of young people in politics. We are grateful for his leadership and our thoughts and prayers are with the Dreyfus family at this difficult time.”
