Gay Photos in Clovis High School Yearbook

Big deal or no big deal?

Some say the pictures are a reflection of the community, according to some, while it's a disgrace according to others.

The pages causing controversy include among the photos of straight couples two lesbian couples showing their affection. One girl is quoted as saying, "I adore my girlfriend. Megan is so beautiful and she likes me for who I am."

Clovis Superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm called this a sensitive issue. However she said no school policies were violated by posting the pictures because the yearbook is a student publication and belongs to the students who followed the rules.

..."It's a disgraceful exploitation of our children," said parent Walter Bradley, a former Republican lieutenant governor. "It was negligent to put pictures of minors in a yearbook making the statements they made.

"That is totally inappropriate."

Bradley said he and other parents are taking their concerns to a school board meeting on Tuesday hoping to ban this type of entry in future yearbooks.

Student editor-in-chief Maggie Chavez and staff member Jessie Hardison said they wanted to show diversity.

They also said the issue was one of discrimination. Gay couples have as much right to be in the yearbook as anyone else, they said.

The photos seem harmless to me and so do the quotes.

Parents who are offended can block out the photos they find so troubling.
