Memorial in Arcadia Vandalized

I suppose jerks think just prior to Memorial Day is the perfect time to vandalize Memorial Park in Arcadia.

From the La Crosse Tribune:

For more than 18 years, Ron Wanek has envisioned, designed and helped pay for the city’s expansive veteran’s memorial that fills a portion of the city’s 54-acre Memorial Park.

So when vandals damaged a portion of the memorial this week, the CEO of Ashley Furniture joined the Arcadia law firm of Kostner, Koslo and Brovold to offer a $10,000 reward for help in arresting and convicting whoever was responsible.

Wanek set out in 1989 to establish a Vietnam memorial in the park, but it has grown to include similar memorials to fallen soldiers from the country’s other wars and most recently to those who died in the attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Earlier this week, someone damaged the two large granite slabs placed in the park to signify the fallen Twin Towers, Arcadia police Chief Pat Grzadzielewski said. The damage was found Wednesday night, he said.

“It consisted of someone scratching words in Spanish and English into the front of the granite monument,” Grzadzielewski said.

...“The city of Arcadia is proud of its Memorial Park, which has been developed, improved and enhanced over the past 18 years,” Kimmel said. “During this entire period, the park has not been the subject of damage or vandalism.”

The words were buffed off of the monument but left noticeable marks, Grzadzielewski said.

Nothing is sacred to some people.
