Obama in Missouri: It's the Flag Pin, Stupid

It's baaaack!

Barack Obama is sporting an American flag pin on his lapel again.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- As Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton prepared to celebrate victory in West Virginia's presidential primary, Sen. Barack Obama was halfway across the country staging what might be called the first event of the Democratic general election campaign.

Obama, pointedly paying little attention to a Clinton win that will barely dent his delegate lead, landed in a swing state and trained his fire on Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee. He predicted McCain would offer "four more years of the same approach that has failed the American people over the last eight years."

Delivering a sharp series of criticisms of McCain's record on taxes, Social Security, health care and the Iraq war, Obama said McCain's election would create four more years of "the Bush-McCain program." As he continued a recent focus on the economy, Obama said recent trends reveal "a story of the American dream slipping away."

The Obama campaign calculates that a victory May 20 in Oregon will give the Illinois senator a majority of pledged delegates to go with his lead in the popular vote, permitting him to declare victory despite losing West Virginia tonight and an expected loss in Kentucky on May 20.

Obama chose Cape Girardeau -- a conservative patch of Missouri that happens to be Rush Limbaugh's hometown -- and two stops Wednesday in Michigan to send a message that he intends to compete with McCain for Independent and Republican votes. He called the November election "a chance to build a new majority."

Ooooh. Rush Limbaugh's hometown! Obama is daring to go deep into enemy territory.

That's so lame.

What is Obama's strategy to compete with John McCain for Independent and Republican votes?

It's the flag pin, stupid!

As he spoke tonight in a sprawling Thorngate Ltd. garment factory before flying to Michigan, Obama noted that he was wearing a union-made suit. He also wore an American flag pin on his left lapel.

I expect Obama to break out the flag pin from now on when he ventures into swing states.

Pimp that lapel, Obama.

Besides a "union-made suit," what else is in Obama's closet?

I've been noticing John McCain's been sans flag lapel pin lately. I wonder if he'll trot it out as needed as well.

I don't think he'll need to do that.
