Donate to Help Wisconsin Flood Victims

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

The American Red Cross in Southeastern Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Council of Churches are accepting donations for victims of this week's flooding in southern Wisconsin.

Red Cross spokeswoman Kate Hinze said the organization will collect contributions for at least a few weeks.

"Relief will be going on for the next two, three, four weeks," she said. "It will be at least a month before this winds down."

Hinze said residents can receive food, water, cleaning kits and medical care at any of the state's shelters. Shelter locations include Zion Lutheran Church in Columbus, Tommy Thompson Youth Center in Milwaukee, Grace Church in Racine and St Joseph Catholic Church and School in Fort Atkinson.

Those wishing to donate can call (800) RED-CROSS or visit www.redcrossinsewis.org.

The Wisconsin Council of Churches partnered with the Wisconsin Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster Relief, a group of faith-based organizations, to pool donations for storm victims.

"We're involved in the long-term recovery of these communities," said Keith Lang, disaster human services coordinator for Lutheran Social Services.

The council asks contributors to make checks payable to Wisconsin Council of Churches 2008 Flood Recovery and mail them to Wisconsin Council of Churches, 750 Windsor St., Suite 300, Sun Prairie, WI 53590.

Real Debate Wisconsin calls on Gov. Jim Doyle to give up the cash he raised for himself at his Tuesday golf outing, in the midst of the state's crisis.

I agree.

Doyle should donate the amount of money he raised Tuesday for his own campaign to help flood victims, the ones who were cleaning sewage out of their basements and watching their homes and businesses be destroyed as he golfed and schmoozed with big donors.

Give up the cash, Gov. Doyle. Do the right thing.
