Ervin Blaylock has come a long way.
Although he's a high school graduate now and on his way to college, he had a rough start.
When Ervin Blaylock was born he weighed only 1 pound 11 ounces. Doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center weren't sure he would make it. After spending the first four months of his life in the hospital, Ervin is now a high school graduate and last weekend he celebrated his 18th birthday.
"I made it. Some people don't make it out of my situation, so... happy to be here," said Ervin.
In 1990, the odds that a 1 and 1/2 pound newborn baby would survive and become an adult was about 20 percent. Now weighing 150 pounds, you could say Ervin Blaylock literally outgrew those odds, but it wasn't easy.
...Ervin was born at just 25 weeks gestation.
...After spending the first four months of his life in the hospital, the only side affect of his early birth has been asthma, and that's now gone. At his high school graduation, a nurse who was with him when he could fit in the palm of her hand said he is a walking miracle.
...Ervin graduated from Minneapolis Washburn High School last month. He plans to attend Minnesota State Mankato in the fall and study computer science.
It is incredible that a baby born so prematurely not only survived but has thrived.
He is truly a walking miracle. When you think about it, aren't we all?
