Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, mayor of the city with the nation's 8th highest poverty rate, believes that Barack Obama can deliver Milwaukee from poverty if he becomes president of the United States.
Barrett looks forward to having a friend in the White House to help Milwaukee.
From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Barrett said Obama's background -- as a community organizer in Chicago and a state senator, before being elected to the U.S. Senate -- means he understands the importance of addressing issues such as crime, poverty and economic development.
With President George W. Bush in the White House during his mayoral term, Barrett said: "I never once felt I could pick up the phone and say, 'Look, we have some serious issues here.'"
Is Bush the mayor of Milwaukee?
Is the president to be blamed for conditions in the city?
Doesn't Barrett have a friend in the governor's mansion?
He should pick up the phone and say to Jim Doyle, "Look, we have some serious issues here."
But first, I think Barrett should look in the mirror and say, "Look, we have some serious issues here."
It's safe to assume that Barrett does not have a sign on his desk that reads, "The buck stops here."
He's no Harry Truman, and neither is Barack Obama.
