Journal Sentinel: Censure Hardin

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Editorial Board is calling for Milwaukee School Board Member Charlene Hardin to be censured.

The Milwaukee School Board should censure member Charlene Hardin and forbid her from taking any more trips after records revealed she racked up bills of more than $8,500 while jetting around the country on the school district’s dime. For one trip, she billed Milwaukee Public Schools more than $400 to rent a Chrysler 300 Touring car for two days.

...A fellow School Board member called her actions "just nuts." We would go further and say that it's time for Hardin to resign. If she doesn't, we urge someone of substance to oppose Hardin in her upcoming re-election campaign in April.

...[School Board President Peter] Blewett and the School Board need to grow a spine and reprimand Hardin publicly. Don't hold your breath. We still are waiting for Hardin to reimburse the district for the cost of a school safety conference that she apparently barely attended in July.

Which is it?

Censure or resignation?

The Board says "it's time for Hardin to resign."

I agree.

Granted, Hardin can resign as well as be publicly reprimanded by Blewett and the Board for her misdeeds.

But I don't understand this: "The Milwaukee School Board should censure member Charlene Hardin and prevent her from taking any more trips after she racked up numerous bills at MPS expense."

Funny that the JS Editorial Board calls for Blewett and the School Board "to grow a spine."

The same could be said for the Board.

Its statement that Hardin should be censured and prevented from taking any more trips runs counter to its call for her to resign as a School Board member.

Obviously, if Hardin resigned, she wouldn't be traveling on MPS business with taxpayers footing the bill.

The board waffles on what to do about Hardin.

Instead of talking about censure and placing limits on her trips, the emphasis clearly should be on resignation.

Plain and simple. Hardin should resign.
