Barack Obama and Nancy Reagan

Take Barack Obama off a teleprompter and the true man is revealed.

From Obama's extremely short first news conference:

Obama: Lynn Sweet?

Question: Mr. President-elect ...

Obama: What happened to your arm, Lynn?

Question: I cracked my shoulder running to your speech on election night.

Obama: Oh, no.

(LAUGHTER)

Question: (inaudible)

Obama: I think that was the only major incident during the -- the entire Grant Park celebration.

Question: Thank you for asking. Here's my question. I'm wondering what you're doing to get ready. Have you spoke to any living ex-presidents, what books you might be reading?

Everyone wants to know, what kind of dog are you going to buy for your girls? Have you decided on a private or public school for your daughters?

Obama: Let -- let me list those off.

In terms of speaking to former presidents, I've spoken to all of them that are living. Obviously, President Clinton -- I didn't want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances.

That is such a cheap shot. Obama says something utterly lame, that he's talked with all the former presidents "that are living," and he instinctively runs for cover by slamming a Republican.

It's disgusting that Obama would mock former first lady Nancy Reagan.

It's not even bad from the standpoint that he insulted Republicans and appeared far from bipartisan.

It's bad from a human standpoint. Belittling an elderly woman was a sleazy move. He showed no compassion with that snide remark.

How incredibly disrespectful!

I think Obama forgot that he wasn't addressing an adoring throng of his followers. He was talking to the nation. He's still in campaign mode, bashing Republicans.

Obama's comment certainly makes his talk about unity seem like empty political rhetoric.

This is not how a president-elect who claims to want to bring the American people together should behave. It's not how anyone should behave.

At this point, Obama is clearly acting as a Democrat leader rather than the person about to be the leader of the nation.

You'd think the brilliant, transcendent Obama would know better. No compassion. No class.

_______________

UPDATE: Obama apologizes to Nancy Reagan for 'careless' joke
President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan this afternoon to apologize for a joke about her having held "séances" in the White House, an Obama aide said.

“President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan today to apologize for the careless and off handed remark he made during today’s press conference," said transition spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter. "The President-elect expressed his admiration and affection for Mrs. Reagan that so many Americans share and they had a warm conversation."

Barack H. Obama cannot speak without a teleprompter. It is going to be another long 4 years combining all of his and J. Biden's foot-in-mouth comments. He has no class. Why mock an elderly and Classy First Lady? Wonder if he will have enough class to apologize, in person. I doubt it.

Please, let's all try to have a little sense of humor, like our new President has. We have enough SERIOUS things to worry about....

I cannot believe this person is President Elect of the United States, Leader Elect of the Free World.

I predicted that by Friday the country would wonder what the heck it had done. I was correct. Between this, the market and the fact that Obama refused to call upon Fox News shows what a small man this guy is.

You're telling me to chill out?

I'm really grasping?

You were all willing to excuse Obama's disgraceful remarks. Your comments sound pretty stupid now that Obama has personally apologized to Mrs. Reagan.

You're hacks.

The fact is Obama really blew his first news conference. Amazing given how short it was. Actually, it's scary.

Yes Mary dear, you really ARE grasping. Obama apologized for what was meaningless, off-hand comment. It was not snide. It was not an attack on the GOP. Give it a rest.

As fro Obama not be able to speak without a teleprompter? Are you insane anon? Di you not watch the debates? The man is a gifted speaker. No matter your politic leanings, there is no way you can honestly deny that!

This would have been news for a week if the new Pres was (R).

The President-elect of the United States should not be making meaningless off-hand remarks during his first press conference; especially when the objective of the press conference was to give confidence to the financial world in this time of crisis. Instead he's making jokes about a Republican.

Obama is a naive putz and he proved it in his first press conference.

Duh.... he wasn't making fun of a Republican. He was saying he hadn't contacted Reagan through a seance. Harmless and lighthearted enough. Except, perhaps unbeknownst to him, Nancy Reagan dabbled in astrology, so it could have been seen as poking fun at her. He apologized. Give it up.

This poster will not be hired as an Obama spinner anytime soon. One must be able to engage in plausible deniability if they want the job. Wow.

He WAS making fun of a Republican, the former first lady of the White House. While in the White House, Nancy Reagan did in fact try to conduct a seance and communicate with the dead.
