Of Thugs and Racism: Limbaugh and The View

Rush Limbaugh is coming under attack for referring to Barack Obama and Rahm Emanuel as thugs.

He's being condemned for using the allegedly racist term.

It's an especially weird argument given that Emanuel isn't black.

(Note: This debate over the word "thug" is not new to Wisconsin. See Badger Blogger and The Political Environment.)

It's a goofy charge, in my opinion. "Thug" isn't racist. It's not code. It's a simple word in the English language.

Rush Limbaugh was pilloried by some of the women on The View this morning.

Their focus, however, didn't appear to be on the supposedly racist implications of 'thug.'

Rush Limbaugh will be one of Barbara Walters' 10 most fascinating people this year. The "View" panelists were not happy that Limbaugh had called President-elect Barack Obama "a thug."

Joy Behar was particularly furious. "This is a guy who's a drug addict. Rush Limbaugh is calling him a thug," Behar said. "He must have bought a lot of drugs over the years from thugs."

...Walters promised to ask Limbaugh about the comment. She even warned Limbaugh the question is coming.

Walters thought that Limbaugh had called only Rahm Emanuel, Obama's chief of staff, a thug. Not so. Whoopi Golberg set Walters straight and said "thug" suggests Obama is a law-breaker. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said people have an issue with Emanuel because he's an "arm-twister."

"So was LBJ," Goldberg said.

"Does the name Dick Cheney ring a bell?" Behar asked.

"No, he's just a bad shot," Goldberg added, as the show went to commercial break.

I think people need to get a grip. And a dictionary.

Anonymous said...: I thank you all for breaking down this moment for me. I find myself going to Rush often anymore because he can sum up the actions of many if very few words. I believe most media and Obama(by grabbing the fast track) and his associates are being thug like.
The jealousy and shock of many justifies my thinking on this.
