John Zogby has had a change of heart about the poll he did for John Ziegler.
Here WAS Zogby's statement, November 18, 2008:
"We stand by the results our survey work on behalf of John Ziegler, as we stand by all of our work. We reject the notion that this was a push poll because it very simply wasn't. It was a legitimate effort to test the knowledge of voters who cast ballots for Barack Obama in the Nov. 4 election. Push polls are a malicious effort to sway public opinion one way or the other, while message and knowledge testing is quite another effort of public opinion research that is legitimate inquiry and has value in the public square. In this case, the respondents were given a full range of responses and were not pressured or influenced to respond in one way or another. This poll was not designed to hurt anyone, which is obvious as it was conducted after the election. The client is free to draw his own conclusions about the research, as are bloggers and other members of society. But Zogby International is a neutral party in this matter. We were hired to test public opinion on a particular subject and with no ax to grind, that's exactly what we did. We don't have to agree or disagree with the questions, we simply ask them and provide the client with a fair and accurate set of data reflecting public opinion." - John Zogby
That's a very clear statement.
Zogby said he stands by the poll.
Today, he's taking a different stand.
From Politico:
Pollster John Zogby has rejected a conservative commentator’s offer to sponsor a poll to test the knowledge of people who voted for John McCain.
The commentator was proposing to mirror a poll of Obama voters that caused a political uproar when it suggested that Obama supporters didn’t know what they were voting for.
John Ziegler, a Burbank-based documentary filmmaker, had commissioned the poll of 512 Obama voters. The results delighted the right and inflamed the left, drawing widespread coverage on the Web, cable news and radio.
...Zogby told Politico in a telephone interview that the volume of reaction was in the top 10 percent he had received to his 24 years of polling.
This week, Ziegler proposed to pay for a similar poll of McCain voters. But Zogby told Politico he will not do the poll the same way.
“I am happy to do a poll of both Obama voters and McCain voters, with questions that I formulated and sponsored either by an objective third party or by someone on the left, in tandem with a John Ziegler on the right – but poll questions that have my signature,” Zogby said.
“I believe there was value in the poll we did,” Zogby added. “I also believe it was not our finest hour. This slipped through the cracks. It came out critical only of Obama voters.”
Ziegler had e-mailed Karen Scott, managing editor of Zogby International: “I am writing because there is great interest in commissioning the same poll of McCain voters and I have obtained the money to do so. If done right I think this can be a win/win for everyone. Please advise me as to the company's thinking on this.”
Scott e-mailed Ziegler in response: “Thank you for being in touch with us, I am sorry no one got back to you yesterday. Your request has been reviewed here at all levels and we are not interested in this project at this time.”
Ziegler told Politico: “I’m outraged. I find this amazing. There was nothing wrong with the original poll. I’m the exact same person I was last week. The left-wing blogosphere basically demanded this.”
Now, suddenly, Zogby says of the poll he so fervently defended that "it was not our finest hour. This slipped through the cracks. It came out critical only of Obama voters."
Why did the poll come out that way?
Why did the results make Obama voters look utterly uninformed?
Perhaps it's because they were.
It's not Zogby's fault.
The simplest way for the Left to prove that an embarrassingly high number of Obama's supporters were not uninformed dolts compared to McCain's supporters is for Zogby to accept Ziegler's offer to do the same poll with McCain voters.
Simple. Why not do it?
Zogby has bowed to pressure from the Left. Zogby admits that "the volume of reaction was in the top 10 percent he had received to his 24 years of polling."
Obviously, Zogby wasn't flooded with encouragement to duplicate the poll with McCain voters. He was targeted by the rabid Left, just as others have been, and Zogby was intimidated.
If you in any way, even unwittingly, tarnish Obama's luster, you will be smeared. If you resist their pressure and you continue to function in a manner that may put Obama in a bad light, you'll be pummeled until you stop.
This is Obama's America.
The Left attacks and demands. The weak capitulate.
Zogby is weak.
