Obama, the Stimulus Bill, and "Each Day We Wait"

Flash back to the days when Barack Obama was operating out of the "Office of the President-Elect" and using his official "Office of the President-Elect" seal.

From January 5, 2009:

President-elect Barack Obama is trying to build bipartisan support for a massive economic stimulus package as he issues dire warnings about the consequences of inaction in the run-up to Inauguration Day.

Obama continued his meetings Monday with lawmakers on Capitol Hill looking to restore an economy that Obama describes as "bad. And the situation is getting worse."

"We have to act and act now," in order to break what he called the "momentum of this recession," Obama said before meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. He met with key Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but also reached out to Republicans.

The talks are a sign that Obama is taking extra care to ensure his top agenda item sails through Congress, as Democrats aim for passage within weeks of Obama taking office.

He said, "We have to act and act now."

As president, in a February 5, 2009 op-ed piece in the Washington Post, Obama ratcheted up his fearmongering rhetoric:

Because each day we wait to begin the work of turning our economy around, more people lose their jobs, their savings and their homes. And if nothing is done, this recession might linger for years. Our economy will lose 5 million more jobs. Unemployment will approach double digits. Our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse.

Oh, my God.

Hurry! There's no time to waste.

The Democrats obliged.

Obama got what he wanted, a massive pork-laden package was rammed through the legislature. He threw his transparency promises out the window. Lawmakers voted to pass the so-called stimulus bill without knowing what's in it and the American people never got the chance to look at the bill for themselves.

Since the bill passed, there's been a dramatic shift in Obama's timetable.

"EACH DAY WE WAIT TO BEGIN THE WORK OF TURNING OUR ECONOMY AROUND, MORE PEOPLE LOSE THEIR JOBS, THEIR SAVINGS AND THEIR HOMES," Obama said.

Isn't it weird that Obama has decided to WAIT four days before signing the so-called stimulus bill?

After pushing Congress for weeks to hurry up and pass the massive $787 billion stimulus bill, President Obama promptly took off for a three-day holiday getaway.

Obama arrived at his home in Chicago on Friday, and treated wife Michelle to a Valentine's Day dinner downtown last night. The couple was spotted leaving upscale Table Fifty-Two, which specializes in Southern cuisine, with the first lady toting what appeared to be a doggie bag.

The president plans to spend the Presidents' Day weekend in the Windy City, and is not expected to sign the bill until Tuesday, when he travels to Denver to discuss his economic plan.

Both the House and Senate passed the bill Friday night.

So the catastrophe is on hold, the impending doom is taking the Presidents' Day weekend off.

Nothing will get in the way of Barack and Michelle having an expensive Valentine's Day dinner date.

That's pretty callous of Barack and Michelle. What? No guilt feelings?

Sure, wait until Tuesday to sign the bill. Why not? Let "more people lose their jobs, their savings and their homes" in the meantime.

Bottom line: There's no way to reconcile the signing delay with Obama's previous hysterical rhetoric.
