Maddie Kiefer's Funeral

Gus Gnorski, reporting for FOX6 News from St. Monica Parish at the funeral of Maddie Kiefer, said that the service was quite lengthy because the church was completely filled, overflowing with mourners.

He said that during the Mass, Fr. Jerry Herda's homily included some messages that may have been difficult for people to hear.

According to Gnorski, Fr. Jerry said that "Maddie was given an ultimate gift. She wasn't an angel. He said she had her troubles. She had her problems, and she unfortunately did not love herself enough to get the help that she needed.

"But, he said that Maddie had given everyone else a lesson. It's something that this community can never allow to happen again. It's a wake-up call to all of us. He said that Maddie left everyone with a lasting impact. In death, she gave everyone here a message to be careful with our lives."

At the end of the service, Gnorski reports that Maddie's father gave a euology that had literally everyone in tears.

He said, "It's a very, very sad morning."

More video from FOX6: This video is heartbreaking. My prayers are with Maddie Kiefer's family as they deal with life without her. I wonder how many of the kids and parents in attendance will heed Fr. Jerry's message. Maybe some of the drug users will be scared straight for a while. But sadly, these wake-up calls too often don't have a lasting impression. Will parents pay attention to their kids' behavior? Will they do everything that's necessary to prevent tragedy, or will they assume that the unthinkable will never happen to their family? In the end, it's the user who's responsible for his or her choices. Family and friends can only do so much. I hope that drug users, kids and adults alike, take note of how much pain they cause their loved ones when they don't take care of themselves. The drug users need to understand how much they are loved and how selfish it is to choose drugs rather than concern for the feelings of others. _______________ On the day that Maddie Kiefer was laid to rest, Matthew Laughrin and Brittany Blue were charged in connection with her death. From WISN:

Prosecutors charged [Matthew] Laughrin with pot possession on Friday after police found marijuana when they searched the Whitefish Bay home he shares with his mother. A 14-year-old friend of Kiefer told police they went to Laughrin's home, where he sold Kiefer $60 worth of marijuana and an orange pill used by addicts to wean themselves off heroin. They partied there, passed out and in the morning, couldn't wake Kiefer. The 14-year-old said she went home and a couple of hours later, Laughrin and his father drove over and dumped Kiefer in her driveway. Friday morning, prosecutors charged Laughrin's girlfriend, Brittany Blue, with drug delivery. She told police she gave Laughrin the orange pill called Suboxone that he sold to Kiefer. She had a doctor's prescription for it. Prosecutors charged her with delivery for giving it to Laughrin. Her lawyer said Blue is cooperating with police. His lawyer told the court Laughrin is invoking his constitutional rights. A decision on possible homicide charges must wait till toxicology tests on Kiefer's blood to identify the drugs in her system.
