Pharm Parties

On Tuesday's TMJ4 10:00 PM newscast, John Mercure did a report on pharm parties.

In the wake of Maddie Kiefer's drug death a dangerous new type of drug party is worrying veteran cops and terrifying nervous parents. And here in Wisconsin it's killing our teenage sons and daughters.

They're called trail mix parties or pharm, p-h-a-r-m, parties. Kids show up with drugs stolen from their parents medicine cabinet. The kids mix them and then down a handful; sometimes with deadly results. The deadly dose of drugs is being passed out like candy.

..."The pills were passed around. Everyone took what they wanted. Some took more. Some took less," Sergeant Greg Bean of the Stevens Point Police Department told us when discussing a recent pharm party death there.

We're not talking street drugs; but what's in your medicine cabinet.

The report focuses on Tyler Trelka. At a party he attended before a school dance, "potent drugs were put into a cup and passed around."

The 8th-grader downed as many as nine Morphine and Vicodin pills.

Tyler died. He fell asleep and never woke up.

Through tears, the boy's mother relays the experience.

Of course, it was very difficult for Tyler's mother, Darlene, to tell the story of losing her son. It was difficult to watch.

...Captain Chuck Wood heads up the Waukesha County Metro Drug Unit. "The opportunity for an instant overdose and tragedy is extremely high," Wood told us recently. "It scares me to death that teens have the misconception that over the counter drugs and prescription drugs are somehow safer than street drugs."

The report was really shocking. I couldn't believe the recklessness, the danger.

Having a drug potluck, making a drug "trail mix," and swallowing a fistful is absolutely insane.

It literally is playing Russian roulette with pills.

You can't mess around with prescription drugs like that. It is potentially suicidal.

Unbelievable. Very disturbing.

You ppl on the right are really over-hypin this, its not that bad. u just go over to ur friends house and mix up some stuff to have a good time. its just like when older ppl drink but since beer is hard to get you just do it with pills, also ppl usually dont check their medecine cabinet and notice that anything is missing anyway.

I dont see why just cuz some stupid kid messed it up, it sould ruin it for everyone else. accidents like that are really rare, i've done this a bunch of times when I was in school and never had anything, bad like that happen. older people are such hypocrits, you guys get to have a good time, but when younger ppl want to kick back, relax, its like the worst thing in the world. And, god forbid, if we should introduce younger kids or girls and show them a good time away from their lame parents.

Well u are hypocrites. you guys drink and have a good time, but we can't? Believe it or not, it is a fact.

If you dont want us to have a good time with leftover meds thatd be thrown away anyway then how about you stop having ur own moral standard and actually change the unrealistic drinking age. whats so unbelievable, we want to enjoy, ourselves, just like you do? Get together and have fun, just like you do?

Anyway the dangers of drugs are way overhyped and your supposed moral standards are bs anyway.

Wow Obvioulsy some kids have posted comments - unrealistic drinking ages? Lets them just have fun whats the harm?

Well first off you are taking pills meant for illnesses & diseases you dont have - your body may not be able to handle the meds - this is why a DOCTOR checks you out does a study on you before they just give you a perscription.

What you can't find any other way to have fun unless you are messed up on pills or drunk? thats sad...

Just b/c the pills are going to be thrown out it doesnt mean you should take them? That is just stupidty & ignorance talking.

Older ppl drink beer bc their bodies are fully grown & their brains are totally developed unlike a teens brain.
Thats why the drinking age is what it is & besides -
its obvious our youth doesn't deserve the priviledge of drinking if they are just going to be little thiefs & steal their parents/ grandparents Meds. How bout this if you kids would act mature - then maybe society would think about lowering the drinking age. kids like you bruce is exactly why its so high - i hope to god i dont live any where near you.

It's saddening to see that some of these kids don't feel any remorse for STEALING from their families...
