Latoya Lewis, an ACORN voter registration worker, was charged yesterday.
From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
In the criminal complaint, Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Bruce Landgraf alleged that Latoya Lewis submitted at least two of eight voter registration cards filled out for the same man, who told police he didn't register to vote through Lewis. The complaint says Lewis told police that she was trying to meet her quota as a paid voter registrar for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.
If convicted, Lewis would face up to 3 1/2 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. She is due in court April 15.
Lewis is the fourth former Milwaukee registrar to face charges stemming from the 2008 election and the first employed by ACORN. Of three others employed by the Community Voters Project, one has pleaded guilty, one is appearing in court March 23 and one is at large. Others remain under investigation.
The Journal Sentinel does acknowledge that Lewis and the others worked for liberal groups. However, the article notes, "The two politically liberal groups say they caught much of the fraud and turned in the suspects, who represent a small percentage of paid registrars."
It seems that the JS is bending over backwards to keep from tarnishing the image of the lib groups, doing damage control. Sure, it's good that ACORN and the Community Voters Project caught some of the fraud and turned in the crooks. But, it's hard to applaud the groups for employing them in the first place.
Moreover, I wonder how much fraud isn't caught at all.
Also, how many Milwaukee registrars from conservative groups have been charged with election fraud?
I'm not aware of any.
To quote Mayor Tom Barrett, "Give me just one name."
