Tom Barrett News Conference (Video)

Mayor Tom Barrett made his first public appearance since he was attacked by Anthony Peters on Saturday night.

At a news conference earlier today, Barrett discussed what happened that night, gave an update on his condition, thanked police and emergency personnel, and thanked his family for their support.

He looked quite good, better than I expected. His face had a long gash, but the other cuts he sustained weren't visible. His right hand was thickly bandaged.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

"I can't think of a situation like this when people would not have responded as I did," he said.

...Barrett shrugged off a suggestion from a reporter's question that some consider him a hero for stepping into the situation, but he wanted to let people know he's recovering. His planned vacation this week has turned into a "stay-cation" while he recuperates at home.

"I just wanted you to know I'm still standing," Barrett said.
