Charlie Gibson: ACORN? Huh? (Transcript)

UPDATE, September 17, 2009: Charlie Gibson now knows about the ACORN scandal.

Is Charlie Gibson the anchor of ABC World News?

As the anchor, shouldn't Gibson be somewhat aware of major national stories?

Is he a journalist?

Here's a portion of his bio on the ABC News website:

Charles Gibson is anchor of ABC's flagship broadcast "ABC's World News," as well as the network's principal anchor for breaking news, election coverage and special events. He is one of the most distinguished journalists in television with more than forty years' experience, thirty-three of those at ABC News.

Apparently, "one of the most distinguished journalists in television with more than forty years' experience" is either clueless or a liar.

Michelle Malkin writes:

Several Chicago readers and Twitterers report that ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson told WLS-AM Chicago talk show hosts Don Wade and Roma this morning that the reason he hasn’t covered the ACORN scandal is that he didn’t know about it.

...Don and Roma pointed out that ABC’s Jake Tapper reported on the Census Bureau’s decision to drop ACORN from its data collection partnerships on Friday as a result of BigGovernment.com’s video stings.

Here's the audio:

DON WADE: OK, here's my news question: A Senate bill yesterday passes cutting off funds to this group called ACORN. Now we've got the, we got that bill passed, and we have the embarrassing video of ACORN staffers giving tax advice on how to set up a brothel with 13-year-old hookers. It has everything you could want -- corruption and sleazy action at tax-funded organizations. It's got government ties. But nobody's covering that story. Why?

CHARLES GIBSON: (Laughs) I didn't even know about it. Uh, so, you've, you've got me at a loss. I don't know. Uh, um, but, but, my goodness, if it's got everything, including sleaziness in it, we should talk about it this morning.

ROMA: This is the American way. (Laughs)

GIBSON: Well, maybe, maybe that's one you just leave to the cables.

ROMA: Well, I think that this is a huge issue because there's so much funding that goes into this organization, and it's a multi-...

GIBSON: I know we've done some stories about ACORN before, but, uh, this one I don't know about.

ROMA: Jake Tapper did his, some blogging on it. I know he's at least blogged once on this scandal.

GIBSON: You guys are, you guys are really up on the, uh, the website.

Unbelievable.

Is Gibson really that stupid or does he think we're stupid?

I don't think Gibson is stupid.

I do believe that Gibson believes that the only truth is that which they hand to us and in the format they hand to us.
