Jim Kosek: Crazy

UPDATE, March 31, 2011: Unhinged Weatherman Goes Nuts Over Bronx Zoo Cobra

Jim Kosek is still crazy. He put on quite a performance, mentioning the missing Bronx Zoo cobra (since found) in his forecast.

Jim Kosek, AccuWeather meteorologist, has been recognized for excellence in his field.

Since he began his employment, Jim has garnered many awards: the 1991 Annual Outstanding Progress in Forecasting Award, the 1993 Annual Outstanding Progress in Broadcasting Award and several Forecaster of the Month awards. He was promoted to Senior Forecaster in 1994.

It's hard to believe that Jim Kosek is the same Jim Kosek that has been informing the public about the recent snowstorms.

Here's his forecast from last weekend:

Not very professional. Strike that. Not professional at all.

Is it funny? Not really, but Kosek must have his fans.

Speaking of fans, here's video from 2008, when Kosek couldn't handle the heat.

He seems to be a frustrated prop comic or a professional wrestler wannabe or drunk.

Kosek must be enjoying the attention he's been getting on the Internet for his crazed style of forecasting the weather.

He's delivered another extreme forecast:

I really don't look to be entertained when I want to know what to expect in terms of the weather. I want accurate information, not hype and certainly not a nutcase screaming at the top of his lungs.

I like the approach the weather team takes at FOX 6 News.

WITI-TV (Channel 6) vice president and general manager Chuck Steinmetz said his station tries to be restrained in its breaking storm coverage.

"When you have (reporters and anchors) sitting around saying 'A storm is coming'...it can lead to more criticism than benefit," he said.

And once on the air "it becomes a judgment call as to how long to stay on. When the story is done, we're done, and we're off the air."

Steinmetz said meteorologist Vince Condella's mantra is: "Be prepared, not scared."

I want a meteorologist to deliver the information on the good, the bad, and the ugly. I can do without the drama and the Jim Kosek wackiness.

Please, no screaming.

Kosek is a bit strange. On the other hand a little comedy makes the weather interesting.

Remember John Coleman of WISN-TV many years ago. Truly a character. So funny I actually tuned in to watch the weather instead of sports or the news.

And then there was another comedian, Tommy Richards (Pops: "Roll 'em, Lester) who did "Weather in the Weather" for a while on WISN, I think. Very funny at times.

And who could forget Ward Allen and Albert the Alley Cat?

By the way, John Coleman went on to found The Weather Channel. He still does the local weather forecasts on KUSI in San Diego. He's calmed down quite a bit, but you can still get the flavor of his personality here:

Weather used to be less serious business in the earlier days of TV, before the era of meteorologists as on-air personalities.

I don't see anything wrong with doing the weather as well as providing a smile.

As far as what's appropriate behavior and what's not, what crosses the line, that's a matter of personal taste.

Kosek's screaming, literally, doesn't appeal to me.

I suppose I'm doing enough screaming about the snow on my own.
