MMSD's dumping of sewage into Lake Michigan has consequences.
Sewage and swimming don't mix.
The heavy rain in the forecast, and the sewage dumping that's sure to follow, doesn't bode well for beach health.
What's Mayor Tom Barrett doing to protect the lake and safeguard the public from this serious health hazard?
I guess he's too busy fundraising and exploiting the oil spill in the Gulf to do much.
Yesterday afternoon, Barrett sent out an e-mail follow-up to his previous message about BP and drilling in the Great Lakes.
Here's the text of the latest e-mail:
Subject: Re: Stop BP from drilling in the Great Lakes
Dear Friend,
Thousands of you have taken the time to sign our petition to protect our Great Lakes from reckless drilling projects, and I thank you for your support.
You'd think the crisis in the Gulf Coast would compel people to ensure this kind of tragedy never occurs again.
But you won't believe what Republicans in the Great Lakes region – including here in Wisconsin – are saying about BP and oil drilling.
In Minnesota, Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann said BP was being 'fleeced' for having to establish a relief fund for the victims of the oil spill it caused in the Gulf Coast.
In Ohio, House Republican Leader John Boehner refused to support legislation that would lift the liability cap on BP and hold the oil behemoth accountable for the economic and environmental damage it has caused in the Gulf Coast.
Right here in Wisconsin, when asked if he would support drilling in the Great Lakes, Ron Johnson – Republican Party of Wisconsin's officially endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate – said, "I think we have to get the oil where it is." (WisPolitics, 06/10)
These are the words of Republican leaders and elites who side with Big Oil, not with us. These comments show why we must renew the ban on Great Lakes drilling and put Great Lakes protection ahead of Big Oil profits.
Our June 30th fundraising deadline is fast approaching, and it is key that we have the resources we need to fight for values like protecting the Great Lakes.
Contribute $5, $10, $25, or $50 now to show that you support our campaign, and help us reach our goal of $50,000 by June 30th.
In the campaign for Wisconsin governor, it is critical that we stand up for our shared values and priorities.
We can fight for Wisconsin working and middle class families, or we can give tax cuts to the wealthiest 1% of Wisconsin taxpayers.
We can fight for education, public safety, health care and equal rights, or we can serve narrow ideological extremes and special interests.
We can offer straight talk and honest plans to solve Wisconsin's problems, or we can hide behind slogans and empty rhetoric.
Republicans Scott Walker and Mark Neumann have made it clear where they stand on these issues. And we know they will fill their campaign coffers with donations from their elite special interest friends. To have the resources we need to win in November, we need you to make a commitment today.
Contribute now to show that we stand together for our shared Wisconsin values before the June 30th deadline.
Thank you for your support,
Tom Barrett
P.S. Stand with us in the fight for our shared Wisconsin values. Help us meet our goal before the June 30th deadline and help us spread the word about our efforts to renew the bans on drilling in the Great Lakes. Click here to forward our petition to your friends and family.
Instead of worrying about drilling in the Great Lakes, why doesn't Barrett address the issue of sewage dumping?
It's a real, current problem that's impacting the health of the public.
Barrett is using scare tactics to raise money for his campaign, playing off all the attention the Gulf oil spill is receiving in the media and exploiting the suffering of those affected by the accident.
If Barrett truly cared about protecting the Great Lakes, he wouldn't stand idly by while Lake Michigan is being used as a sewer.
