Milwaukee Rents Sewer Pumps

So it's come to this -- rent-a-sewer system.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Facing more than 1,200 basement backup complaints from last week, the Milwaukee Department of Public Works rented 20 portable pumps in advance of heavy rains forecast for Thursday and Friday that could be used to transfer wastewater from storm-burdened sanitary sewers to a nearby waterway, officials said Wednesday.

The pumps will serve as temporary sewer overflows in an attempt to prevent sewage backups into basements of residences in several city neighborhoods, DPW communications manager Cecilia Gilbert said. This is the first time the department has employed portable pumps to reduce volumes in sanitary sewers and prevent basement backups, Gilbert said.

DPW crews will position the pumps by noon Thursday.

As of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, residents of 1,201 Milwaukee houses complained of water or sewage in basements after last Thursday's storm, and the calls still were coming in, DPW officials said.

Renting 20 portable pumps?

Is that really going to significantly help prevent more basement backups in the event of heavy rain?

Why 20 rentals? Will that magic number do the trick?

I have my doubts.

Where does one go to rent pumps for a city's messed up sewer system? I didn't know renting portable pumps was an option.

The timing of this step being taken is interesting. Homeowners have experienced backups repeatedly before. Why rent pumps now?

Is this about helping out weary flood victims or helping out Tom Barrett in his election bid for governor?

Moreover, these pumps are no solution. They may spare some people from having sewage in their basements once again, but they won't spare the local rivers and Lake Michigan. The pumps are meant to "transfer wastewater from storm-burdened sanitary sewers to a nearby waterway." Not exactly a healthy, environmentally sound alternative.

In effect, the pumps are just an extension of the dumping solution that MMSD already uses to address the terrible inadequacies of the system.

This solution is no solution at all.

A rental portable sewer system? Not good.
