Mitt Romney was Jay Leno's guest on Wednesday's Tonight Show.
Naturally, Leno asked Romney about Sarah Palin.
Because Palin could be a primary opponent for Romney in 2012 should they both decide to run for president, it's not completely out of line for Leno to bring up Palin. Still, Leno can't seem to have any remotely political figure on his show without discussing Palin.
The Leftists are obsessed with her. The Palin talk is so predictable. It's almost a nightly occurrence. Actually, it's rather annoying and creepy, not to mention boring.
Thankfully, as often as Leno turns to Palin as fodder for jokes or as a topic of discussion, he hasn't quite reached the extreme level of weirdness displayed by David Letterman when it comes to Palin.
While Leno was talking to Romney, he appeared to be trying to get him to go negative on Palin. He failed.

JAY LENO: Did you meet Sarah Palin when you went to Alaska?
MITT ROMNEY: I did not meet Sarah Palin when I went to Alaska. I was fishing in Alaska.
LENO: OK. Have you ever, have you met her personally?
ROMNEY: I have. During the campaign, when she was the vice presidential nominee with John McCain, we campaigned at a couple of rallies together. We were on the bus together. She was with Trig and the whole family. And she's a remarkable, energetic, powerful figure in my party.
LENO: Well, that's true. That's true.
ROMNEY: And attractive, too.
LENO: And attractive as well.
ROMNEY: Yeah, yeah.
LENO: Now let me ask you, let's say you decided to run. Remember she said if there are no other good candidates, she will enter the race. Now if you enter the race and then she enters, is that an insult?
ROMNEY: (Laughs) Maybe it means that she thinks I'm a great candidate. That's it.
LENO: No, come on. How do you handle that?
ROMNEY: Well, she would have to decide what she thought, and I'll have to make that decision down the road; so uh, but she's a qualified, capable person.
LENO: Now you were governor of my home state of Massachusetts. And this is the one thing I think will stop, well, not stop, but I think really impede Sarah Palin is the fact that she quit as governor. Now you were a governor of a state. Could you ever see yourself quitting for any other reason?
ROMNEY: Uh, no, it's hard to imagine the circumstance where I'd have quit. I loved the job. Truth was being governor is probably the best job you can think of because you have a real impact on the lives of people you care about, you meet wonderful people, you can improve schools and get health care for folks. It's a great job. I loved it. But she had her reasons.
And by the way, if someone's looking for me to say something about, you know, negative about Sarah Palin, why, that's not going to come from me. I mean, did you see what she did to the halibut the other night on her show? I mean, I'm not, I'm not in for that.
LENO: No, I understand how it works.
The halibut line sounded like a prepared remark, but I think the gist of Romney's comments was sincere.
He respects Sarah Palin, and he's not willing to join the ranks of Republicans and/or conservatives trashing her.
