Here's a clip from Clay Matthews' appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno:
JAY LENO: Now, you were pressuring Roethlisberger the whole game. Well, take a look here.
(Clip)
LENO: That's the part. See, now that part right there, we looked at that over and over. We had this argument, 'he said something to Roethlisberger.' What did you say?
CLAY MATTHEWS: Well, I was just letting him know that if I would have gotten that ball there was no way that he was gonna catch me, and I was gonna be gone. So, I was just having some fun with him, letting him know, trying to get in his head.
LENO: And did you say it as politely as that, 'I just want you to know that...' I mean, did you say it like that?
MATTHEWS: I believe so. I think it was along those lines.
LENO: Very polite, very polite.
MATTHEWS: Please, thank you, appreciate the opportunity.
LENO: Please, thank you, maybe a nice text or something.
Video of the full interview here.
Part 1: Clay Matthews from the Green Bay Packers talks about winning the Super Bowl and his trademark long hair.
Part 2: Super Bowl winner Clay Matthews from the Green Bay Packers talks about rituals and football running in his family.
After discussing the championship game itself, Leno got into some other topics, like Aaron Rodgers and the belt.
LENO:Now the whole thing with Aaron and the belt, you know, I'm watching and I go, I'm not a football expert but I don't remember anybody getting a belt. What was that? You brought him that belt. Explain.
MATTHEWS: I did. You know, he's kind of adapted that as his celebration, as the whole, you know, people's champ celebration, the belt. And I was able to find a belt after the game. One of the fans had it. I brought it up to him and was able to present him with the actual belt, world championship belt for winning the Lombardi Trophy, the Super Bowl, and he deserved it.
LENO: And how pissed off was the NFL office? Now come on, be honest. Were they like, 'What, what belt? What is that? What's he doing? What's he doing with that belt?'
MATTHEWS: You know, they weren't happy about that. In fact, the next day I heard about it. They wanted to know how I got it, why I brought it up on stage. But, you can't say a whole lot to us. We're world champs. What can you say to us?
LENO: Yeah, that's right.
Leno asked Clay about his hair and how long he's been growing it - 5 or 6 years.
Leno showed a picture of him with short hair.
Clay joked that he looks like he belongs in a police lineup and he should learn to smile.
Leno asked if he has any pregame rituals.
Clay said he didn't have a ritual per se but he has to get his hair wet before the game.
MATTHEWS: When I'm out there, I get a bottle of water, put it throughout the hair, fling it back there. There's plenty of pictures out there, and this is even when it's 10 below out in Chicago or Green Bay. So, there's icicles on the tip of my hair, but I have to do it in order to get ready for the game.
LENO: OK, that is a ritual. You call that not a ritual, but that is a ritual.
Leno asked what this win means to Clay and he brought up the football tradition in the Matthews family.
MATTHEWS: Well, first and foremost, it means so much for the Green Bay organization, that we were able to bring the Lombardi Trophy, in which they name it after, back to Titletown where it rightfully belongs.
For me personally, having a father and uncle who played in the league for 19 years each, 38 years of combined playing experience, with one Super Bowl to show for it and a loss at that, and I'm able to go out and get a win in my second year. It feels great for, like I mentioned, the organization but also the Matthews family.
Leno mentioned that Clay grew up in California.
LENO: I know you grew up right up the street here, right? You grew up in California. Average temperature here - 72 is a chilly day. OK, you go to Green Bay. Please. How cold is that?
MATTHEWS: It was, the coldest it got was negative 26 with wind chill out there. In fact, we had our parade, our celebration yesterday. It was 8 degrees with wind chill at negative 18.
LENO: Now, do the guys give you grief about being a California boy?
MATTHEWS: Well, it's tough, you know, coming from the West Coast, going out to the Midwest, especially the frozen tundra. You know, you're considered soft when you go out there. So, for me, I really have to let everybody know this is not true. I'm trying to break that mold, and you know, sleeveless, no heaters, trying to go out there and let 'em know the West Coast can hang tough.
Leno ended with a plug for Clay's endorsement deal with Suave.
LENO: Well, good luck and maybe you'll get a big shampoo commercial.
MATTHEWS: Oh, absolutely.
LENO: Good to see you. A very 'suave' young man.
Clay seemed so comfortable. He did a better job responding to Leno's questions and appeared more at ease than many Hollywood celebrities do.
It was a fun interview.
