Clay Matthews - Hand Over Heart

I didn't watch the game again. I had better things to do on such a beautiful Sunday in Wisconsin. It was a perfect autumn day.

Although I didn't see any of it, I was aware of the score throughout the game. I'm glad the Packers won.

I'm especially happy with the way Clay Matthews conducted himself during the national anthem. Maybe he just wanted to protect his brand. Who knows? But whatever his motivation, Matthews did not protest during the anthem by doing the oh-so lame linking arms thing and that's good.

Packers React on Twitter

I'm glad to see the Packers exercising their free speech, even though they'll be fined for it.

DWTS: Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, Mike McCarthy

UPDATE, May 22, 2012: DONALD DRIVER WINS THE MIRROR BALL TROPHY!

During the finale, Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews offered words of encouragement to their teammate:

_________________

The Green Bay Packers showed their support for Donald Driver as he performed in the Dancing With the Stars semifinals.

From the Green Bay Press-Gazette:

If it were a Green Bay Packers game, it would be all tied up late in the fourth quarter and just one spectacular Donald Driver catch away from victory.

As the Packers wide receiver has done all season on "Dancing With the Stars," he got awfully close to crossing the goal line — including the lofty one set by impossible judge Len Goodman — on Monday’s semifinals but again came up just short of a ballroom touchdown. He and partner Peta Murgatroyd are in third place with a 57 out of 60 heading into tonight’s elimination, which will narrow the field to the final three for next week’s finale.

...With such a close field and no obvious choice for the next couple to go, Packers fans could find themselves in unfamiliar territory tonight — sweating Driver’s fate for the first time in nine weeks. But for anyone nervous, just heed the words of Driver’s young son, Christian, who said adorably in a segment for the cameras with his sister, Christina, "When he stands at the end, it’s gonna be a 10. And I know it will."

...With Green Bay Packers players Clay Matthews and Aaron Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy cheering him on in the front row of the audience, Driver and Murgatroyd, both visions in white, performed an enchanting waltz to “Kissing You" from “Romeo + Juliet" that the judges found worthy of a 28.

...Driver and Murgatroyd switched gears in the second round for a more flirty samba to “Mr. Big Stuff" that Goodman found “here and there a little bit careful," Tonioli praised for being outside of the traditional realm of Brazilian dance and Inaba classified as “A+ game." On a night when two couples got perfect scores, Driver came up just a point shy with a 29. And yep, it was Goodman who still didn’t give up the 10.

...Each of the four stars shared the stories of their upbringings in videos. Driver talked of growing up in a tough neighborhood in Houston, his dad in prison and his mom struggling to raise five children. He teared up as he told how his mother, unable to care for all her children, sent Driver and his brother to live with their grandparents. Driver found trouble there, including crime and selling drugs.

"I was a great athlete, but I was always a troubled kid. I stayed a troubled kid all the way through college. The turning point was when I met my wife," he said.

Betina Driver recalled their first date at McDonald’s — "the only thing we could afford in college" — and how she told him it was either going to have to be the drugs or her. "If you love a person that much, you’re willing to give up everything to be with that person," Driver said. "And I was willing to give it all up."

Rodgers also appeared in the segment, saying, "Donald has always let his playing do the talking for him, and then he backs it up with that incredible smile and personality."

Very inspiring.

Where would Donald Driver be today if he hadn't met Betina?

What a great influence she had on him!

It was nice to see Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews and Mike McCarthy in the audience to support Donald Driver.

It was a surprise to me. I didn't know they were going to be there, even though it was no secret.

Usually, after Driver dances, we see a shot of his smiling wife and adorable kids. This time, we also saw three men applauding Driver. I didn't recognize them at first. Then, I realized it was Rodgers. I also noticed Matthews. I didn't have time to identify the third in the trio. After Driver's second dance, I saw it was McCarthy.

I hope Packer fans don't let Driver down. I did all I could to help get him to the finals. I cast my votes.

Clay Matthews, Ellen DeGeneres (Video)

Clay Matthews visited Ellen DeGeneres for her Super Bowl show yesterday.

Here's video:

ELLEN DEGENERES: So, Clay, will you be watching the Super Bowl?

CLAY MATTHEWS: Yes, Ellen. I'm having all my friends and family over at my house this Sunday. We're all gonna gather around my big screen TV, and then I'll put in my DVD of last year's Super Bowl, Packers versus Steelers.

ELLEN: That is a good game.

CLAY: I predict the Packers will win by 6.

ELLEN: Well, we'll see if you're right.

...

CLAY: You know, a survey said that 44 percent of women that watch the Super Bowl are for commercials.

ELLEN: Oh. Although a survey of the women in my audience said 100 percent of them watch it for the extremely tight pants.

CLAY: That's right, Ellen. Ladies love tight pants, and they also love long hair as well.

...

ELLEN: Now, Clay, I know this is a sensitive subject for you, but I wanted to ask you about your playoff loss to the Giants. A lot of people credit the Giants' pass rush, but personally, I think you lost because of this woman.

(Video)

CLAY: She wore sparkly nail polish. That's why we lost. You can't bedazzle your nails and expect a victory.

ELLEN: No, no. Well, those are words we can take right to the Super Bowl.

Packer Fan Crying (Video)

Now we know what happened. Now we know why the Packers lost.

Megan.

Megan told Casey to put the sparkles on her nails and to wear her Clay Matthews jersey.

If only Casey hadn't listened to Megan. She wanted to wear her Aaron Rodgers jersey, but she listened to Megan. Big, BIG mistake!

Staged or real, I feel Casey's pain.

We all wanted the Packers to win the Super Bowl.

Clay Matthews and Jay Leno (Video)

Here's a clip from Clay Matthews' appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno:

JAY LENO: Now, you were pressuring Roethlisberger the whole game. Well, take a look here.

(Clip)

LENO: That's the part. See, now that part right there, we looked at that over and over. We had this argument, 'he said something to Roethlisberger.' What did you say?

CLAY MATTHEWS: Well, I was just letting him know that if I would have gotten that ball there was no way that he was gonna catch me, and I was gonna be gone. So, I was just having some fun with him, letting him know, trying to get in his head.

LENO: And did you say it as politely as that, 'I just want you to know that...' I mean, did you say it like that?

MATTHEWS: I believe so. I think it was along those lines.

LENO: Very polite, very polite.

MATTHEWS: Please, thank you, appreciate the opportunity.

LENO: Please, thank you, maybe a nice text or something.

Video of the full interview here.

Part 1: Clay Matthews from the Green Bay Packers talks about winning the Super Bowl and his trademark long hair.

Part 2: Super Bowl winner Clay Matthews from the Green Bay Packers talks about rituals and football running in his family.

After discussing the championship game itself, Leno got into some other topics, like Aaron Rodgers and the belt.

LENO:Now the whole thing with Aaron and the belt, you know, I'm watching and I go, I'm not a football expert but I don't remember anybody getting a belt. What was that? You brought him that belt. Explain.

MATTHEWS: I did. You know, he's kind of adapted that as his celebration, as the whole, you know, people's champ celebration, the belt. And I was able to find a belt after the game. One of the fans had it. I brought it up to him and was able to present him with the actual belt, world championship belt for winning the Lombardi Trophy, the Super Bowl, and he deserved it.

LENO: And how pissed off was the NFL office? Now come on, be honest. Were they like, 'What, what belt? What is that? What's he doing? What's he doing with that belt?'

MATTHEWS: You know, they weren't happy about that. In fact, the next day I heard about it. They wanted to know how I got it, why I brought it up on stage. But, you can't say a whole lot to us. We're world champs. What can you say to us?

LENO: Yeah, that's right.

Leno asked Clay about his hair and how long he's been growing it - 5 or 6 years.

Leno showed a picture of him with short hair.

Clay joked that he looks like he belongs in a police lineup and he should learn to smile.

Leno asked if he has any pregame rituals.

Clay said he didn't have a ritual per se but he has to get his hair wet before the game.

MATTHEWS: When I'm out there, I get a bottle of water, put it throughout the hair, fling it back there. There's plenty of pictures out there, and this is even when it's 10 below out in Chicago or Green Bay. So, there's icicles on the tip of my hair, but I have to do it in order to get ready for the game.

LENO: OK, that is a ritual. You call that not a ritual, but that is a ritual.

Leno asked what this win means to Clay and he brought up the football tradition in the Matthews family.
MATTHEWS: Well, first and foremost, it means so much for the Green Bay organization, that we were able to bring the Lombardi Trophy, in which they name it after, back to Titletown where it rightfully belongs.

For me personally, having a father and uncle who played in the league for 19 years each, 38 years of combined playing experience, with one Super Bowl to show for it and a loss at that, and I'm able to go out and get a win in my second year. It feels great for, like I mentioned, the organization but also the Matthews family.

Leno mentioned that Clay grew up in California.
LENO: I know you grew up right up the street here, right? You grew up in California. Average temperature here - 72 is a chilly day. OK, you go to Green Bay. Please. How cold is that?

MATTHEWS: It was, the coldest it got was negative 26 with wind chill out there. In fact, we had our parade, our celebration yesterday. It was 8 degrees with wind chill at negative 18.

LENO: Now, do the guys give you grief about being a California boy?

MATTHEWS: Well, it's tough, you know, coming from the West Coast, going out to the Midwest, especially the frozen tundra. You know, you're considered soft when you go out there. So, for me, I really have to let everybody know this is not true. I'm trying to break that mold, and you know, sleeveless, no heaters, trying to go out there and let 'em know the West Coast can hang tough.

Leno ended with a plug for Clay's endorsement deal with Suave.
LENO: Well, good luck and maybe you'll get a big shampoo commercial.

MATTHEWS: Oh, absolutely.

LENO: Good to see you. A very 'suave' young man.

Clay seemed so comfortable. He did a better job responding to Leno's questions and appeared more at ease than many Hollywood celebrities do.

It was a fun interview.

More Clay:

Clay Matthews is a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today.

Ellen picked the Green Bay Packers to win the Super Bowl -- and they did! Now the team's linebacker, the incredible CLAY MATTHEWS, is stopping by to tell Ellen all about winning the big game.

That should be great!

What's kind of funny is Matt LeBlanc is also Ellen's guest today. LeBlanc was Leno's first guest on his Wednesday show.

Matt LeBlanc and Clay Matthews must be getting to be good friends.

PACKERS IN NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

What a great night!

The Packers are in the NFC Championship game, their first of the Aaron Rodgers era.

The team didn't just beat the Falcons on Saturday night. They dominated. Dominated isn't strong enough. The Packers pulverized them, 48-21.

It was fantastic!

I like what Deion Sanders had to say about Rodgers' performance.

DEION SANDERS: We can chalk it up any way you want, Coach. We can talk about what Atlanta didn't occupy, what they didn't have, but it all points down to Aaron Rodgers. This guy was an absolute man amongst men today. His pocket presence, his mobility, his arm strength, his decision-making process - this guy was the complete package, the total package.

All you people who doubted this organization when they did away with Brett Favre: How you like him now? How do you like the situation the Green Bay Packers are in today?

I LOVE IT!

From the Green Bay Press-Gazette:
Aaron Rodgers, Tramon Williams and the rest of the Green Bay Packers stormed into the rowdy Georgia Dome on Saturday night and gave the NFC’s top-seeded Atlanta Falcons a brutal playoff whuppin’.

The white-hot Rodgers blistered Atlanta’s defense drive after drive with playmaking scrambles and pinpoint passing, and Williams made two game-turning plays late in the second quarter to propel the Packers to a dominating 48-21 win over the Falcons in the divisional round of the playoffs.

“It was a special day,” Rodgers said of the Packers’ blowout. “We kind of did what we wanted to do.”

Next for the Packers, who are 12-6 and maybe the league’s hottest team, it’s on to Chicago or Seattle for the conference championship and a chance to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since January 1998, when the franchise’s bid for back-to-back championships was short circuited by the Denver Broncos.

The second-seeded Bears and fifth-seeded Seahawks play Sunday afternoon at Chicago for the right to host the sixth-seeded but ultra-confident Packers.

“We’re a championship-caliber football team,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “We talked about it before the Philadelphia game, we have 16 quarters on our mind, we’ve completed eight of them, we have an opportunity to play in four more next week, and we feel very good about who [we] are, the way we play and our brand of football.”

You gotta believe.

I do.
