Memorial Day …it’s not about war… it’s about people. It's about those who died, most of them young, serving their fellow Americans, their country, future generations — all of us.

“One Nation, One Moment.”

A Call for All Americans to Unite



Background: In 1996, Carmella LaSpada, founder of No Greater Love, met a group of school children touring Washington, D.C. She asked them what Memorial Day meant to them and they responded, “That's the day the pool opens.” This unknowing response directly led to the creation of the National Moment of Remembrance on Memorial Day.

In 2000, No Greater Love asked Congress to officially establish the National Moment of Remembrance, to ensure that the sacrifices of the dead of all our wars, conflicts, training accidents and the thousands of those who have died as a result of war’s emotional wounds are remembered.



When: Observe the Moment of Remembrance on Memorial Day, Monday May 28, 2012, 3PM local time. Research shows this is the time when most Americans are out enjoying their freedom.



Where: Wherever you are at 3PM, whether alone, with family or friends - such as your neighborhood pool, picnic grounds, barbeques, etc. You may ring a bell to signify the beginning and end of the Moment. In this shared remembrance, we connect as Americans in honoring our fallen.



Why: In 2000, a Gallop Poll revealed that only 28% of Americans knew the true meaning of Memorial Day. So we encourage all citizens to make every day Memorial Day in their hearts and minds, but especially on Memorial Day itself.



How: Simply pause for the Moment - It can be a simple gesture, such as placing your hand over your heart, bowing your head, or offering a prayer, and promising to live a good life in honor of those who gave their lives for our freedom. It puts your remembrance into action. The Moment does not replace traditional Memorial Day events.

This year, to unite Americans in the National Moment of Remembrance, we are reaching out to the 165 million pet owners. Most Americans don’t know about the important contributions made by K-9 heroes – including ‘Cairo’ the canine commando who helped Navy SEALs bring down Osama bin Laden. Military Working Dogs are credited with saving thousands of American lives and have served in every modern war.

We invite all Americans to observe the Moment with their own best friends—human and animal, wherever they may be at 3PM local time. May the unwavering loyalty of ‘man’s best friend’ inspire all of us to express that same loyalty, respect, and love for our fallen.
