'Fifty Shades of Grey' and the Bible

The Damson Dene Hotel in England is definitely not a family-friendly establishment.

From FOX News:

If you ever book a reservation at the Damson Dene Hotel in England, don’t expect to have a copy of the Bible waiting for you.

Instead, the hotel’s owner has replaced the holy book with none other than the best-selling novel ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’ The owner said he didn’t think many people read the Bible, so now there is a book in the rooms that everyone wants to read.

It's not unusual for hotels not to have a Bible in the guest rooms.

I don't have any problem whatsoever about an owner of a private business deciding what to offer customers.

The fact that the owner got rid of the Bible doesn't bother me in the least. My concern would be for children staying at the hotel. Making a sexually graphic novel accessible to young guests is not a good idea.

If the hotel is an "adults only" sort of place, then there's no issue. However, the Damson Dene Hotel promotes "family suites" among its accommodations. Dogs are welcome.

"One of the friendliest hotels in the UK. The staff are delightful"
The Times

Nestled in the tranquil Lyth Valley, the Damson Dene Hotel is the ideal location for a peaceful break away from it all. Only a short drive from Lake Windermere and the popular town of Bowness-on-Windermere, we are in close proximity of all the visitor attraction of the South Lakes.

Clearly, the owner does expect children to stay at the hotel.

In fact, activities at the hotel are designed for children. Here's part of the Christmas Eve itinerary:

In your bedroom you will find a copy of the Christmas Day lunch menu and wine list. We would be grateful if you could make your choice and inform Reception before 10pm this evening. You will also be required to choose your preferred dining time – lunch will be served between 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

After dinner, relax in the hotel bar or lounge. At 8.30pm, all children can join Lorraine in the lounge to help her decorate the Children’s Christmas tree and of course, to leave some mince pies and sherry in the hearth for Father Christmas and a carrot for Rudolph.

If you would like to attend a midnight mass, our Reception team will be more than happy to advise you of local services.

The Damson Dene Hotel may be "one of the friendliest hotels in the UK," but not for families with children.

I'd be creeped out if I found that book in my room. I would think someone left it behind. I certainly wouldn't think the owner put it there.

I probably would call housekeeping and ask them to remove and replace all the bedding. I probably would ask that the bathroom be cleaned again.

Yuck.

I think I'd need to leave.

Then again, there's some pretty racy stuff in the Bible, too.
