Fred Usinger Day

I love Usinger's.

I love the store on Old World Third Street. I love the marble, and the murals on the walls with their German captions, and, of course, the sausage.

I'm jonesing for Usinger's mortadella and summer sausage and brats. Fridays in Lent can be tough.

Tomorrow, the city and county of Milwaukee are recognizing Fred Usinger's contribution by proclaiming it Fred Usinger Day.

From OnMilwaukee.com:

Both the city and county have issued proclamations dedicating the day to Usinger, who founded his well-known sausage company 130 years ago and remains a fixture on Old World 3rd Street -- across the street from the Old German Beer Hall -- to this day.

The free bratwurst giveaway honors the legendary sausage-maker by with an homage to a longtime Milwaukee tradition. Bars, in Usinger's early days, often provided customers with free lunches and bar owners were willing to purchase Usinger's sausages because of their popularity with customers.

Customers can get their free bratwurst by visiting the Old German Beer Hall, 1009 N. Old World 3rd St., between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Free brats!

What's not to love?

I definitely plan to celebrate Fred Usinger Day tomorrow.
