When you paint a "mural" on a street with traffic, it's not going to remain pristene. The street isn't private property. It's a taxpayer-funded thoroughfare. Maybe it's not a good idea to allow "murals" to be painted on public streets.

The infamous Andres Serrano, creator of Piss Christ, reemerges at the Vatican as Pope Francis sings the praises of 200 artists.

Serrano is the creator of the controversial “Piss Christ,” in which he submerged a model of Jesus Christ on the crucifix in his own urine.

Pope Francis welcomed 200 artists to the Sistine Chapel to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Vatican’s collection of contemporary art.

“Thank you for accepting my invitation; I am happy to be with you, because the Church has always had a relationship with artists that can be described as both natural and special,” the pontiff told the artists, including Serrano. “A natural friendship, because artists take seriously the richness of human existence, of our lives and the life of the world, including its contradictions and its tragic aspects. Art can never serve as an anesthetic; it brings peace, yet far from deadening consciences, it keeps them alert. Often, as artists, you attempt to plumb the depths of the human condition, its dark abysses. We are not all light, and you remind us of this. At the same time, there is a need to let the light of hope shine in that darkness, in the midst of our selfishness and indifference. Help us to glimpse the light, the beauty that saves.”

Andre Serrano's Piss Christ did not help me "to glimpse the light, the beauty that saves."

I guess Pope Francis must have a different view of beauty and light.

Artistic expression is grounded in freedom, but it is not free from responsibility.

Art, like all forms of expression, has consequences.
