Although I disagree with John Edwards when it comes to politics, I defended him when the news first broke back in 2007, that he had cheated on his wife, Elizabeth.
I thought the National Enquirer's story was concocted tabloid trash. I didn't think Edwards would betray his wife.
I gave him way too much credit.
Now, after years of public denials and lies about his affair and his baby with Rielle Hunter, Edwards faces prosecution for criminal wrongdoing.
The United States Department of Justice in Washington has given the go ahead for John Edwards to be prosecuted in connection with a campaign finance investigation.
A source familiar with the case tells the I-Team Edwards now knows that federal prosecutors intend to indict him.
As we have been reporting, the former Senator has been the focus of a federal grand jury investigation in Raleigh for the past two-and-a-half years.
From Chopper11 HD Tuesday evening the Edwards mansion in Orange County appeared to be quiet.
The I-team has learned Edwards is deciding how to proceed now that the Justice Department has given the green light for him to face criminal charges.

The John Edwards - Rielle Hunter scandal would make a great screenplay. Some aspects of it are almost too bizarre to be believable. Truth is stranger than fiction, I guess.
Former presidential candidate John Edwards abandoned his long denial that he had fathered a child during an affair with a campaign aide and admitted today that he is the father of the almost 2-year-old girl.
"I am Quinn's father," Edwards said in the bombshell statement this morning. "I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves."
The former senator and presidential hopeful had an affair with campaign cinematographer Rielle Hunter, 45, and she later give birth to Frances Quinn.
Edwards' admission comes a week before the man who had claimed he was the baby's father, former aide Andrew Young, was scheduled to appear in an exclusive interview on "20/20".
In an excerpt from his upcoming interview with ABC News's Bob Woodruff, Young alleges that Edwards asked him to arrange a fake a paternity test.
"Get a doctor to fake the DNA results," Young said Edwards told him. "And he asked me ... to steal a diaper from the baby so he could secretly do a DNA test to find out if this [was] indeed his child."
Steal a diaper? Fake a paternity test?
It's like a movie, a bad movie.
Of course, Edwards' admission was prompted by Young's upcoming 20/20 interview. Edwards gets no credit for coming clean. He had no choice but to quit lying.
It's incredible that Edwards was honored as Father of the Year on June 7, 2007. His daughter, Frances Quinn Hunter, was born on February 27, 2008.
In his acceptance speech, Edwards said:
I realized your children..., it is true, your children learn not only from what you say, but from what you do.
And... whenever they do anything that you're proud of in your life, you'll be able to look back on the things that you taught them, both through your words and through your deeds.
It makes you want to gag, doesn't it?
This is about as sleazy as it gets.

As a grand jury in North Carolina considers whether Edwards misused campaign funds to cover up the scandal, Elizabeth still can't abide his former mistress, Rielle Hunter.
Word is Elizabeth vehemently opposed the plan, now in place, for Hunter and daughter Quinn to move from New Jersey to Wilmington, N.C., where the Edwardses have a beach house.
For months now, Elizabeth, who is said to be talking to a divorce lawyer, also has been sniping at Hunter - painting her as a blackmailing gold digger - in blog comments where she uses the pseudonym "Cherubim," according to a source who knows Elizabeth.
Though "Cherubim" has recently described herself as an African-American woman, the source insists, "It's Elizabeth. She's used 'cherubim' as a password. Look at the gravestone of their son Wade: It's an angel holding a boy."
"Cherubim" has also heaped scorn on estranged Edwards aide Andrew Young, who is working on a book in which he's due to reveal that Edwards and wealthy supporters paid him to claim that he fathered Quinn.
In a proposal for the book, Young contends that Elizabeth blamed him for helping her husband carry on the affair and forced Young to quit the campaign. He also alleges that Elizabeth left taunting messages on his family's answering machine - telling his wife, Cheri, that Rielle supposedly had slept with Young and that she was likely to again.
If the allegations are true, this "source who knows Elizabeth" isn't a very good friend to reveal that "Cherubim" is the pseudonym she's been using to post blog comments.
It's also not cool to reveal that Elizabeth uses "cherubim" as a password.
What a mess!
I'm in no way defending Elizabeth Edwards' alleged lashing out on the Internet or on the family answering machine of Andrew Young.
She'd be wise to stay away from the ugliness of the Internet and not waste her precious time.
So many people let her down. So many people in her life behaved selfishly -- most of all, her husband.
I don't know how John Edwards can live with himself, knowing the pain he's causing his wife as she struggles with her illness.
It's disgusting that Andrew Young is choosing to write a book now about the whole sorry saga. Doesn't he have any pangs of guilt for trying to profit at the expense of the Edwards family?
If Elizabeth did blame Young and if she did leave taunting messages on the answering machine at his home, can't he understand why she'd be acting a little nuts at the revelation of her husband's betrayal?

...On Wednesday, one day after Oprah's production company released excerpts of the interview, The National Enquirer reported that Rielle Hunter, John Edwards' former mistress, is working with a lawyer to seek a paternity test from him.
That's a reversal from last August, when Hunter's attorney Robert Gordon released a statement saying she "will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her or her daughter's privacy now or in the future."
Edwards said at the time that he would "welcome" a paternity test, and that because of the "timing" of his affair "it's not possible that this child could be mine." But he indicated that his apparent willingness to take the test would lead nowhere unless Hunter consented.
"I'm only one side. I can run only one side of the test, but I'm happy to participate in one," Edwards said at the time.
It's unclear whether Edwards would be as willing to submit to a test if Hunter is on board with the idea.
His wife said in the interview Thursday that, "I suppose it would be easy" to determine the paternity but she did not press for a test.
"Whatever the facts are doesn't change my life in a sense," she said, adding that if the child is her husband's, "then that would be a part of John's life, but it's not part of mine."
It really makes me sick when I think of what John Edwards is putting his wife and his children through.
That said, I don't know why Elizabeth Edwards chose to attack Rielle Hunter in her new book. Certainly, talking about the affair will sell more copies, but she had to know that angering Hunter would be playing with fire. I guess Elizabeth doesn't care. What does she have to lose?
...Pigeon O'Brien, a former close friend of Hunter's who publicly questioned Edwards' account of the affair last year, said in an e-mail to FOXNews.com that she didn't know whether Hunter is seeking a paternity test. But she added: "It all has to do with [Elizabeth Edwards'] book and the resulting chaos."
In her book, "Resilience," due out next week, Elizabeth Edwards calls Hunter's life "pathetic" and writes that she threw up when she learned of her husband's affair.
A source reportedly told the Enquirer that Hunter decided to abandon the "cover-up" over the paternity of her daughter after learning about the contents of Elizabeth Edwards' book, in which she reportedly refers to the baby only as "it" and does not name Hunter.
While Andrew Young, a former Edwards campaign aide, claimed to be the father of Frances Hunter, another former campaign worker told FOXNews.com last summer that he and Hunter had "no relationship." The birth certificate for Frances Quinn Hunter does not list a father.
The question of paternity isn't the only matter still dogging Edwards in the wake of the affair and his subsequent confession. Federal investigators are also looking into how he's managed his campaign funds -- finance questions arose last year after his political action committee paid more than $100,000 to Hunter's company for the production of short videos.
Edwards went on the record saying he would welcome the opportunity to take a paternity test. He insisted that it was impossible for him to be the father.
If that's the case, then he should publicly pressure Rielle Hunter to cooperate and submit to a test.
The results would put an end to the soap opera, at least the doubts about Edwards being the baby's father.
Now that it seems Hunter is ready to participate in a paternity test, Edwards can't run away.
We know Edwards lied to his wife about the affair. It's not hard to believe that he's lying about fathering the child.
He's already a known liar. I don't think a test proving or disproving his paternity would impact what people think of him.
At this point, he has nothing to lose -- except maybe money. He destroyed himself.

"When working for the Edwards camp, my conduct as well as the conduct of my entire team was completely professional. This concocted story is just dirty politics, and I want no part of it."
These days, things really aren't going well for John Edwards.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- His once-prominent political career is buried and the turmoil of his marriage is playing out in public. Now, John Edwards is facing a federal inquiry.
The two-time Democratic presidential candidate acknowledged Sunday that investigators are assessing how he spent his campaign funds — a subject that could carry his extramarital affair from the tabloids to the courtroom. Edwards' political action committee paid more than $100,000 for video production to the firm of the woman with whom Edwards had an affair.
The former North Carolina senator said in a carefully worded statement that he is cooperating.
"I am confident that no funds from my campaign were used improperly," Edwards said in the statement. "However, I know that it is the role of government to ensure that this is true. We have made available to the United States both the people and the information necessary to help them get the issue resolved efficiently and in a timely matter."
While Edwards focused his comment on campaign funds, he also had a range of other fundraising organizations — including two nonprofits and a poverty center at his alma mater — that have come under scrutiny.
Chief among them was the PAC that paid Rielle Hunter's company for several months in 2006 for Web videos that documented Edwards' travels and advocacy in the months leading up to his 2008 presidential campaign. The committee also paid her firm an additional $14,086.50 on April 1, 2007.
We don't need to rush to judgment on this investigation to come to the conclusion that John Edwards is scum.
I was such a fool for coming to his defense when allegations of an affair first surfaced in 2007.
When The Enquirer went with the story, I considered it tabloid trash. I would not believe that Edwards would betray his wife, Elizabeth, particularly given her health issues.
I was wrong. He did. If he misused campaign funds, it wouldn't surprise me. If he can do what he did to his wife, he's capable of anything.
...Since announcing the affair, Edwards has remained largely secluded, and he canceled all his public appearances before the November election because he said he didn't want to be a distraction for Obama.
His wife, Elizabeth, who is terminally ill with cancer, will soon be releasing a book talking about the affair. In it, she writes that news of the affair made her vomit. She also describes Hunter as "pathetic."
Hunter may be pathetic, but she's no more pathetic than John Edwards.
I have sympathy for Elizabeth. She's struggling with a terminal illness at the same time she's dealing with this horrible betrayal.
Elizabeth Edwards has built up a tremendous reserve of public support and respect. It's earned. She's smart, accomplished, articulate and has suffered far more than her share of personal tragedy. But she also chose to launch a celebrity (sorta) tell-all book called Resilience that covers her husband John Edward's affair and so she opens herself and her relationship up as a subject of public discussion.
So let's be clear; in equal proportion to her victimhood, Elizabeth Edwards also aided and abetted her husband in deceiving Democratic voters on an unprecedented scale.
She helped her husband commit an odd sort of fraud - taking money from thousands of people under false premises, in a sort of personality Ponzi scheme that would have made Bernie Madoff blush. Elizabeth Edwards knew that narrative of the Edwards's personal relationship was a winner with voters and she helped spin it. She was an active part of his campaign and not just for policy reasons.
Electoral politics is, after all, only partially about policy. Elizabeth humanized John Edwards. He's a guy who oozed smarmy, insincere, self-centered lawyer but he's married to Elizabeth, so he might be okay. Elizabeth wasn't a trophy wife; she was a real woman and their love affair story was spiked with elements that gave Edwards more depth, a sense of a man deeper than first appearances.
Together, John and Elizabeth spun the stories in an effort to gain donations and votes. The details they told were true. Anniversaries at the fast food restaurant Wendy's. Her battle with cancer. The unfathomable loss of their son. These facts were and are real but they served as misdirection to another reality - that John Edwards had undertaken an emotional and sexual affair with a campaign worker named Rielle Hunter.
Elizabeth knew.
She knew that her husband had used campaign money to pay his mistress to travel with him. In her book, she apparently claims that she urged her husband to end his Presidential bid...but she kept helping him raise money. She allowed their personal narrative to be the subject of story after story and even stepped it up when her cancer returned.
I've spoken with Edwards supporters who gave him thousands of dollars of hard earned money because they believed in him. Some even convinced other family members to donate to Edwards. They felt betrayed and angry.
Stranahan is right. Elizabeth isn't an entirely innocent figure in this sleazy drama.
Edwards made the belated admission to his wife in an effort to stop ex-lover Rielle Hunter from going public, sources told The ENQUIRER.
While Edwards has admitted to having an affair with Rielle, he has shamelessly denied fathering her baby, despite plenty of evidence to the contrary. Instead, one of his campaign workers, Andrew Young, claimed to be the dad.

I'm inclined to believe the report. The Enquirer has been right about this story from the beginning.
For a long time, I've believed that Edwards was lying about being the baby's father.
Maybe Edwards did confess to his wife a while ago but he certainly didn't come clean to the American people.
If he is the baby's father, then he flat-out lied on the record when he was interviewed by Bob Woodruff on ABC's Nightline, August 2008.
Edwards said he knows he could not be the father based on the timing of the baby's birth on February 27, 2008.
A grainy photo that appears to show Edwards holding a child was published recently in the National Enquirer, which claimed that the baby was Rielle Hunter's child Frances Quinn. Edwards said he couldn't make "sense" of the photo.
"I don't know if that picture is me," Edwards said. "It could well be. It looks like me. I don't know who that baby is. I have no idea what that picture is."
Pressed to clarify whether the child in the picture was Hunter's child, Edwards suggested that the tabloid may have digitally altered the picture, but also noted the frequency with which politicians hold babies. "Do you know how many pictures have been taken of me holding children in the last three years? I mean it happens all the time."
Edwards was asked again about the meeting.
"Are you saying you don't remember holding that child of Miss Hunter?"
"I'm saying you asked me about that photograph. I don't know anything about that photograph, I don't know who that baby is. I don't know if the picture has been altered, manufactured, if it's a picture of me taken some other time, holding another baby…I have no idea. I was not at this meeting holding a child for my photograph to be taken I can tell you that."
Sometimes the cover-up is worse than the original misdeed.
In this case, it's all so slimy.
What a fool I was to believe that Edwards actually possessed some degree of decency and honor!

Now that John Edwards has admitted to having an affair with Rielle Hunter, the mainstream media are talking about the story they ignored for months, playing catch-up with the National Enquirer.
The first time I laid eyes on Rielle Hunter, I could tell she was a story. She had frizzy blond hair with DARK roots, wore bright nail polish and moved like someone who knew how to work a room. She was on a cramped commuter flight and she was flirting with a candidate for president of the United States.
Opposites attract.
John Edwards has silky hair and no dark roots.
It was July 7, 2006. I'd been sent to Iowa to write a piece on John Edwards. We were on our way to Des Moines, where I would be the only national reporter following him around the state for two days. From a few rows back, I tried to observe Edwards before the plane took off. Most of the other passengers seemed to have no idea who Edwards was. But this blond woman, putting away her bags, was visibly captivated by him. She tried repeatedly to engage him in conversation, but he seemed uninterested in talking... Edwards now admits that he had an extramarital affair with her. But at the time I had no reason to suspect there was anything between them.
...I struck up a conversation with the woman at the next event, as we waited outside. She told me her name and asked me what my astrological sign was, which I thought was a little unusual. I told her. She smiled, and began telling me her life story: how she was working as a documentary-film maker, living with a friend in South Orange, N.J., but how she'd previously had "many lives." She'd worked, she said, as an actress and as a spiritual adviser. She was fiercely devoted to astrology and New Age spirituality. She'd been a New York party girl, she'd been married and divorced, she'd been a seeker and a teacher and was a firm believer in the power of truth.
It gets even more bizarre.

We agreed to meet at Aqua Grill in SoHo on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. When I arrived at the restaurant, she was already seated. Her purpose on this Earth, she said, was to help raise awareness about all this, to help the unenlightened become better reflections of their true, repressed selves.
Her latest project was John Edwards. Edwards, she said, was an old soul who had barely tapped into any of his potential. The real John Edwards, she believed, was a brilliant, generous, giving man who was driven by competing impulses—to feed his ego and serve the world. If he could only tap into his heart more, and use his head less, he had the power to be a "transformational leader" on par with Gandhi and Martin Luther King. "He has the power to change the world," she said.

The ex-mistress of former presidential candidate John Edwards said Saturday she will not participate in DNA testing to establish the paternity of her daughter.
Rielle Hunter's lawyer, Robert Gordon, says his client is a private individual who is not running for public office and that she wishes to maintain the privacy of her and her daughter.
"Rielle is therefore making no statement now or in the future," Gordon said in a statement. "Furthermore, Rielle will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her or her daughter's privacy now or in the future."
Hunter's decision means that the issue of who the father is remains an open question, leaving one more question unanswered.
The strange behavior of Edwards and those around him, coupled with the backlog of other tabloid allegations had already raised many questions.
Three weeks ago, for instance, the National Enquirer confronted John Edwards at 2:40 a.m. leaving his mistress' hotel room in Beverly Hills, allegedly after visiting their so-called love child. Shortly afterward, FOXNews.com confirmed Edwards indeed had been escorted from a hotel bathroom by security guards who witnessed his sprint from reporters.
In the days that followed, Edwards dismissed all related questions, consistently saying he wouldn't respond to "tabloid lies."
Now, he has answered the biggest question surrounding the reports by admitting to an extra-marital affair with Hunter, in 2006.
He still, however, denies claims that he fathered her child and all knowledge of his supporters' financial support of her and the former staff member who has claimed to be the father.
No wonder Edwards was so quick to agree to a paternity test. Not just agree to one, he was eager to volunteer.
Gee, he must be so disappointed to learn that Hunter would consider it an invasion of her privacy and her daughter's privacy to determine the father.
In his initial statement about the affair, Edwards said:
I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established.
It's awfully easy for Edwards to act like he desperately wants to "take any test necessary" to prove that he's not the father of Hunter's baby.
He put out that statement on Friday and then yesterday Hunter released her statement that she refuses to participate in any DNA testing.
Hunter will have no part in any testing to establish the identity of the baby's father.
What a shocker!
There really is no need to have a DNA test.

This sort of stuff always hits on a Friday. Naturally, Edwards chose today to make his admission. Plus, the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics are taking center stage today and a war is breaking out in Georgia. What timing!
FINALLY, the mainstream media addressed the story, after being shamed by the National Enquirer and the blogosphere.
When the National Enquirer first broke the story last October, I defended Edwards.
I thought Edwards, a candidate for president at the time, was the victim of dirty politics. I thought it was a sleazy story planted by a political enemy. I couldn't buy it, with all its unnamed sources.
It seemed goofy, typical tabloid stuff. Most of all, I could not believe that John Edwards would betray his ill wife Elizabeth.
I was a fool to defend him.
Edwards is an adulterer. He's a liar. He's selfish and cruel.
He lied during his campaign. He lied to the American people; but we've been through this sort of thing a million times. Some powerful public figures believe they're entitled to anything and anyone they want. Some people, like Rielle Hunter, are willing to latch on to the rich and famous to get what they want. Pure selfishness.
So now Edwards will be on ABC's Nightline tonight to throw himself on the mercy of the public.
We've seen these lame interviews before. I'm sure it will be the same old "I have sinned" crap.
In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he loved only his wife, Elizabeth.
"Two years ago I made a very serious mistake," Edwards said, blaming the prominence of being a vice presidential candidate. "All of which fed a self-focus, an egotism, a narcissism that leads you to believe that you can do whatever you want," he said.
Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test. He said he would be happy to take one.
Edwards said he knew he was not the father based on timing of the baby's birth on February 27, 2008.
...Edwards said the affair began during the campaign after she was hired. Hunter traveled with Edwards around the country and to Africa.
Edwards said he told his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family about the affair in 2006.
"She was mad, she was angry, I think furious would be a good way to describe it," Edwards said.
Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife's cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter. Elizabeth Edwards has since been diagnosed with an incurable form of the disease.
This is disgusting.
Even in Edwards' admission, he's trying to put himself in the best light possible. Elizabeth was in remission at the time.
WHO CARES? That's irrelevant. That doesn't make it any better.
For Edwards' staff and supporters, the ones who were kept in the dark, this revelation by the man they believed in must be extremely disturbing.
For Elizabeth, it must be shattering.
I don't believe that it is, but let's assume for a moment that the Edwards/Hunter affair is over, that it ended two years ago. The National Enquirer has proof that he was visiting Hunter on July 21, 2008. He was in a hotel room in the wee small hours of the morning with her.
I can't imagine that Elizabeth liked hearing that. I assume that Edwards promised that he would never have contact with Hunter again. Even if the affair is history as Edwards is claiming, his relationship with Hunter clearly isn't over.
So what are the political consequences that this big lie poses for John Edwards?
I don't know. Ted Kennedy managed to get beyond the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. What Edwards has done, or is doing, is much less dramatic than that scandal.
I'm not thinking of this in terms of politics and certainly not in terms of Democrats and Republicans.
I'm thinking of Elizabeth Edwards. She must be devastated. It doesn't take much to imagine the lies Edwards told her.
As she struggles with her illness, when she needs her husband most, he betrays her.
Every moment she has is so precious now. I can't believe Edwards would behave in a manner that would surely cause her such incredible pain.

When a supermarket tabloid told a version of the story, I used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99% honest is no longer enough.

Admitting one’s mistakes is a hard thing for anyone to do, and I am proud of the courage John showed by his honesty in the face of shame. The toll on our family of news helicopters over our house and reporters in our driveway is yet unknown. But now the truth is out, and the repair work that began in 2006 will continue. I ask that the public, who expressed concern about the harm John’s conduct has done to us, think also about the real harm that the present voyeurism does and give me and my family the privacy we need at this time.
The real harm is all rooted in the behavior and lies of John Edwards. His choices to be unfaithful and to lie about it have consequences.
It's not a private matter when someone hoping to be the president lies to the public and presents a false image.

The latest chapter from the Enquirer had me wondering if I had been a fool to believe that Edwards would never betray his ill wife. The account was so goofy, with Edwards running around, dodging reporters and a photographer, and finally hiding out in a bathroom for 15 minutes. It seemed too silly to be true.
Now FOX News reports that a hotel security guard confirms some of the tabloid's story.
A hotel security guard told FOXNews.com he intervened this week between a man he identified as former Sen. John Edwards and tabloid reporters who chased down the former presidential hopeful after what they're calling a rendezvous with his mistress and love child.
The Beverly Hilton Hotel guard said he encountered a shaken and ashen-faced Edwards — whom he did not immediately recognize — in a hotel men's room early Tuesday morning in a literal tug-of-war with reporters on the other side of the door.
"What are they saying about me?" the guard said Edwards asked.
"His face just went totally white," the guard said, when Edwards was told the reporters were shouting out questions about Edwards and Rielle Hunter, a woman the National Enquirer says is the mother of his child.
The guard said he escorted Edwards, who was not a registered guest at the hotel, out of the building after 2 a.m. Edwards did not say anything while he was escorted out, said the guard, adding that at times the reporters on the scene were "rough on him," sticking a camera in his face and shouting questions.
...A former campaign staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told FOXNews.com he wishes he were "more surprised" to hear reports Edwards was visiting Hunter. "I'm definitely upset by it. I wish I was more surprised, though."
...Beverly Hills Police Sgt. Michael Publicker, meanwhile, confirmed Friday that an incident report was filed with the department by two of the tabloid's reporters. Publicker said that contrary to a published report, a "criminal complaint" was not filed and there are no charges pending.
"It will be looked into," Publicker said, refusing to say whether Edwards would be contacted as part of a formal investigation. "We're not going to comment on the investigation," he said.
Police department spokesman Tony Lee said Publicker told him that Edwards was not named on the incident report.
Of course, Edwards continues to deny the affair and that he is the father of Hunter's child.
The press has no DNA evidence to confirm that Edwards is in fact the father.
However, it appears that the hotel incident did occur. If a visit to a former campaign worker is above board, it doesn't go down this way.
The thought that Edwards would betray his wife Elizabeth as she battles her disease is sickening.

I thought he loved his wife, at least enough to respect her and stand by her during her health crisis. I was convinced that was the case.

Vice Presidential candidate Sen. John Edwards was caught visiting his mistress and secret love child at 2:40 this morning in a Los Angeles hotel by the NATIONAL ENQUIRER.
Rielle had driven to Los Angeles from Santa Barbara with a male friend for the rendezvous with Edwards. The former senator attended a press event Monday afternoon with L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on the topic of how to combat homelessness.
But a months-long NATIONAL ENQUIRER investigation had yielded information that Rielle and Edwards, 54, had arranged to secretly meet afterward and for the ex-senator to spend some time with both his mistress and the love child who he refuses to publicly acknowledge as his own.
The story of the rendezvous and Edwards' early morning departure from the hotel reads a bit like a screwball comedy.
At 9:45 p.m. (PST) Monday, Edwards appeared at the hotel, and was dropped off at a side entrance. NATIONAL ENQUIRER reporter Alan Butterfield witnessed the ex-senator get out of a BMW driven by a male companion and stroll into the hotel.
Said Butterfield: "Edwards was not carrying anything. He walked in alone. He was wearing a blue dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He was looking around nervously before he entered the hotel.
"Once inside, he interestingly bypassed the lobby and ducked down a side stairs to go to the bottom floor to catch the elevator up - rather than taking the elevator in the main lobby. He went out of his way not to be seen."
Meanwhile, Rielle had reserved rooms 246 and 252 under the name of the friend who had accompanied her from Santa Barbara, Bob McGovern. Rielle was in one room and McGovern was in another with her baby. This allowed her and Edwards to spend time alone, a source revealed.
Edwards went out of the hotel briefly with Rielle, they were observed by the NATIONAL ENQUIRER and then went back to her room, where he stayed until attempting to sneak out of the hotel unseen at 2:40 a.m. (PST). But when he emerged alone from an elevator into the hotel basement he was greeted by several reporters from the NATIONAL ENQUIRER.
Senior NATIONAL ENQUIRER Reporter Alexander Hitchen asked Edwards why he was visiting Rielle and whether he was ready to confirm that he was the father of her baby.
Shocked to see a reporter, and without saying anything, Edwards ran up the stairs leading from the hotel basement to the lobby. But, spotting a photographer, he doubled back into the basement. As he emerged from the stairwell, reporter Butterfield questioned him about his hookup with Rielle.
Edwards did not answer and then ran into a nearby restroom. He stayed inside for about 15 minutes, refusing to answer questions from the NATIONAL ENQUIRER about what he was doing in the hotel. A group of hotel security men eventually escorted him from the men's room, while preventing the NATIONAL ENQUIRER reporters from following him out of the hotel.
Said reporter Hitchen: "After we confronted him about seeing Rielle, Edwards looked like a deer caught in headlights!

I have difficulty believing that Edwards would arrange to see his alleged mistress and baby in a hotel in LA.
Certainly a more discreet location could have been the site of the meeting.
And then Edwards attempting to slip out of the hotel, thwarted by Enquirer reporters and a photographer, the running around, the hiding out in the restroom -- It's a goofy scene.
If Edwards was, in fact, holed up in the bathroom for 15 minutes, I'm sure an Enquirer photographer would have captured that. There would have been plenty of time.
One of the reporters could have taken photos or video on a cell phone.
It's strange to me that there's no photographic evidence of the episode.
However, the Enquirer seems bent on proving this story to be true. After all, it has been a "months-long investigation."
Moreover, I wouldn't think the Enquirer would want to mess with trial lawyer Edwards. It would be like begging for a lawsuit.
I don't buy the details of this latest account, but I am beginning to wonder about the alleged affair and the child.
I still don't want to believe that Edwards would betray his wife Elizabeth as she battles her disease. I would hope that he would have the decency to love and respect his wife and children as they deal with Elizabeth's health crisis.
Edwards did get kind of close to being a heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States. It's not good to think that someone next in line to be leader of the free world would be the type to have a Charles Kuralt thing going.
This revelation, true or not, does cast a dark shadow on Edwards, possibly making him less likely to have a role in what could be an Obama administration.

Remember that a Clinton ally is closely connected to The Enquirer.
What the tabloid's readers, in politics and out, may not know is that a key owner of the Enquirer is a prominent New York investment banker and one of Hillary Clinton's key backers, Roger Altman. Altman was an official in the first Clinton administration, and his name is often mentioned as a possible Clinton Treasury Secretary.
The investment boutique which Altman founded and chairs, Evercore Partners, bought a controlling stake in American Media, which publishes the Enquirer, in 1999, which it still holds with a partner. Evercore's president, Austin Beutner, sits on American Media's Board of Directors, according to Evercore's website.
A spokesman for American Media, Richard Valvo, said in an email that Altman has "no involvement in editorial, ever." He said that Evercore owns 20 percent of the company through an investment fund. Altman didn't respond to an email seeking comment or to a message left with his secretary.
American Media has also published lurid and negative stories about the Clintons since its acquisition.
I don't think this proves that the Clintons are behind the Edwards story.
Yes, there's a connection. It's because the connection is so clear that it would be risky for Clinton to exploit it. But desperate times call for desperate measures. The sagging Hillary is certainly desperate.
If the story is true, John Edwards is finished as a contender for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
The story is the National Enquirer top-of-the-page cover article -- which is set to go on sale at the checkout counters of the supermarkets and drug stores of Iowa, New Hampshire and the other 48 states Wednesday morning -- that claims the former senator from North Carolina is the father of a soon-to-be-born "love child."
...Edwards and the staffer are reportedly denying the story -- with the campaign issuing an absolute and unequivocal dismissal of its validity. The Enquirer counters with a claim that it has obtained confirmations from friends of the woman who say she shared the details of the affair and the pregnancy with them. Reporters for the weekly newspaper also claims to have seen emails that were purportedly sent by the woman regarding an affair.
The Enquirer and other tabloids, it should be remembered, broke stories of Bill Clinton's affairs in 1992. But Clinton had a reputation as a rogue. Edwards has always presented himself as a dedicated husband to Elizabeth, who is currently fighting cancer, and as the doting father of young children.
Under the circumstances, it is difficult to see how the Edwards campaign could survive a legitimate sex scandal.
It may not even be able to survive an illegitimate sex scandal.
Edwards has been surging in Iowa -- a new Insider Advantage poll of likely Democratic caucus-goers has him ahead of New York Senator Hillary Clinton and just one point behind Illinois Senator Barack Obama. But he cannot afford to lose the critical days leading up to the January 3 caucuses that will make or break his campaign responding to questions -- fair or not -- about whether he got a staffer pregnant.
I think it's far more likely that the alleged scandal is illegitimate.
That makes the whole thing even more troubling. If a candidate is going to implode, it shouldn't be because of a concocted story in a tabloid.

The visibly pregnant blonde has relocated from the New York area to Chapel Hill, N.C., where she is living in an upscale gated community near political operative Andrew Young, who's been extremely close to Edwards for years and was a key official in his presidential campaign.
And in a bizarre twist, Young — a 41-year-old married man with young children — now claims HE is the father of Rielle's baby! But others are skeptical, wondering if Young's paternity claim is a cover-up to protect Edwards.
I think this "bombshell" is coming straight from Hillary's campaign.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Bill was dispatched to get this scandal in the oven.
I kid. I kid. But the scandal does have the Clinton style written all over it, and Hillary is really desperate right now.
The story could also be coming from Obama's campaign. When it comes to the politics of personal destruction, Obama can convincingly claim innocence because so many people know how dirty Hillary and the Clinton machine can be. More importantly, Obama has been a victim of the Clinton slime himself.
Seriously, I still don't buy the Enquirer story.
The timing of the "bombshell" is very suspect, catching people just before they zone out for the holidays but in time to get attention before the January 3 Iowa Caucus.

I would never vote for John Edwards.
I don't agree with his stand on the issues. I don't like the way he stretches the truth and panders. I really can't stand his call for Americans to sacrifice and conserve to save the planet while he's among the nation's mega-consumers, leaving an enormous carbon footprint trail. Sources have come forward to charge that the "other woman" previously worked on Edwards' campaign and followed the 54-year-old candidate on trips across the U.S.
A source close to the woman, whose name is being withheld by The NATIONAL ENQUIRER, says that she confessed to having an affair in phone calls and emails, saying that her work with Edwards soon exploded into romance.
..."The affair started about 18 months ago," a friend says the woman confessed to her. "When they met at a bar, sparks flew immediately.
"She never expected it would turn sexual since John is married and is running for President. But it soon did — and she fell for him."
In one bombshell e-mail message provided to The NATIONAL ENQUIRER, the woman confesses to a friend she's "in love with John," but it's "difficult because he is married and has kids."
In another e-mail, she writes: "Last night and this a.m., he actually has amazed me. He is a great man. My heart is loud and my head is silenced."
Disclosed her friend: "She initially confided in a few of her closest pals that she was sleeping with 'a married man named John.'
"It became clear the married man was John Edwards. They got together whenever they could, mostly at hotels where Edwards and his campaign staff stayed."
The woman later spelled it out in a phone call to her pal and talked openly about having an affair with Edwards.
Sometimes The Enquirer gets it right. That's undeniable.
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards Thursday vehemently denied a supermarket tabloid's story that he cheated on his wife.
"It's completely untrue, ridiculous," Edwards told reporters in Summerton, S.C., after being asked about a National Enquirer story that said he had an affair with a campaign staffer.
The Enquirer did not name the woman or the source of its information. But the Web site MyDD.com, a political "direct democracy" forum, posted a statement from Rielle Hunter, a woman who has made a series of short documentaries about the former North Carolina senator.

I don't for one minute believe that Edwards would cheat on his wife, especially given her health situation.
During their marriage, they've faced tragedies and challenges together. There's no way Edwards would do that to her.
