Doug La Follette: FOX 6 Interview

UPDATE, June 15, 2011: Doug La Follette: 'I will publish' the law on June 28
_______________

In an interview with FOX 6 News, Wisconsin Secretary of State Democrat Doug La Follette insisted that he's not delaying the publication of the budget repair bill for it to become law.

Here's video:

La Follette claims he wasn't asked to publish the bill on the next working day after it was signed by Governor Scott Walker. So, he's not.

La Follette tells FOX6 ten days is the standard, and he's not trying to slow the bill down. "Someone has put out false information that we are not going what we normally do. Everybody is coming with hateful comments to me. I wish people would understand the facts. We are doing exactly what we normally do.", says La Follette

La Follette says in the past two years his office has published more than 400 bills on the 10th business day after passage. He would expedite it if the Governor or another official would ask, but no one has.

Governor Walker signed the bill March 11th, say he hoped it would be published in one business day. When asked about how fast the bill should be published, the Governor had no comment.

"Hateful comments"?

Good grief. La Follette is so thin-skinned.

I don't understand how La Follette can claim that no one requested that the bill's publication be expedited.

At the ceremonial signing of the bill on Friday afternoon last week, Governor Walker said:

We just had a ceremonial signing. I officially signed Act 11 into law, excuse me, Act 10 into law this morning at approximately 9:30. That measure was taken over to the Secretary of State's office. He has signed it, and we're awaiting publication of that, which routinely, when requested, is done in the next working day. He has up to 10 working days to do it, but routinely in the past it has been done upon request within one working day. And it is our hope that tradition in state government will continue.

So, Governor Walker actually signed the bill at 9:30 in the morning on Friday. The measure was taken to La Follette's office and La Follette signed it.

The Governor told all of Wisconsin that he was expecting publication of the bill on the next working day (Monday). He made a public statement saying he hoped La Follette would maintain the tradition of granting his request.

La Follette wants us to believe that he wasn't asked to publish the bill sooner than 10 working days.

What's the procedure to request that La Follette publish the bill? Does he need an engraved invitation of some kind?

Did Governor Walker's office fail to officially request the bill's publication?

What's the deal?

There seems to be some confusion. Governor Walker indicated that he did request the bill's publication on the next working day. Sec. La Follette says that's not the case.

Perhaps the Governor should contact La Follette and spell out his clear request for the bill's immediate publication.

Every day that goes by without the bill becoming law, unions continue to ram through contracts granting raises and benefits and bargaining powers to public employees.

Since La Follette has stated he won't publish the bill until March 25, because no one asked him to do otherwise, I think the request should be made immediately.

Wisconsin taxpayers deserve immediate relief.
