Another Milwaukee German institution is no more.

John Ernst Cafe was the first to close. Now Ratzsch's.
Look at this tweet from just last Tuesday:
Looks like a spring sunny day in #Milwaukee head on over to Karl Ratzsch for lunch. #sunnydays #Lunchtime #germanfood

That doesn't seem like a message from a restaurant on the verge of folding.
This is kind of embarrassing.
Opened 1904. Got new management, 2016. Go inside Milwaukee's legendary Karl Ratzsch Restaurant: https://t.co/kwdxyREXEX pic.twitter.com/AMrFKfEr27

There was no warning of its impending demise. That's unfortunate for families with a history at the restaurant. There was no opportunity for one last visit. Apparently, the place was very different under the new ownership, but it still was the site of countless gatherings for special occasions and celebrations over the decades for so many Milwaukeeans. I would have liked to know what was about to happen.
Maybe it's good I never experienced the new incarnation to mess up my memories of the Ratzsch's I loved so much.
Mader's is the last of the Big Three still standing.
