The Republican primary race for state treasurer of Wisconsin has gotten really weird.
From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
In making a point about abortion, a Big Bend woman seeking the Republican nomination for state treasurer said she hopes her opponent's fiancée is forced to keep a baby if she is raped. Here's the screenshot of Millies' shocking Facebook post:
Jill Millies, who is running against Travis Hartwig of Oak Creek in a Republican primary for treasurer, made the comment on Facebook following a call from Hartwig to drop out of the race.
The comment referred to Hartwig's answer to a recent survey in which he was asked in what circumstances should abortion be allowed, and Hartwig said in no circumstances.
"Travis keeps making me look better all the time! So Travis, when your fiancée gets raped, I hope she keeps the baby & when that mentally ill person shoots you with his 55 magnum or shot gun, but it’ll be ok because he didn’t have to get cleared to carry that gun! Your ways aren’t looking good now, are they?!" Millies said in a Wednesday Facebook post that has since been deleted. Hartwig posted a screenshot of the comment on his campaign Facebook page.
That's terrible!
Millies posted an apology on her campaign Facebook page on Thursday, and told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that her post was made in a moment of frustration.Millies has no reasonable excuse for her remarks. I'm glad she apologized, but she is not fit to serve.
"Push come to shove, this is my first time in politics and I'm just sick and tired of Travis and his little minions coming onto my Facebook page and bashing the hell out of me all the time," Millies said. "I guess I just blew it after awhile."
She said she was trying to make a point to Hartwig about how his preferred policy on abortion would result in women being forced to carry babies to term if impregnated by a rapist.
"I don’t wish rape upon any woman — that is the worst thing," she said. "But when he posted on the (survey) that he said he wouldn’t do anything about it. I was like, really Travis, you wouldn’t do anything?"
Hartwig posted on Facebook that Millies' post represents "the absolute gutter of politics."
"When faced with facts my opponent turned to personal threatening attacks. We will not stand for this behavior," he wrote.
