Mayor of Milwaukee, Cavalier Johnson, sent the following email on Monday morning:
Friend, Today, as we celebrate Juneteenth, we remember the path our nation has traveled, honoring those who fought for justice and equality. This day symbolizes not only the end of legal slavery but also marks the beginning of a long fight for equality that continues to this day. In Milwaukee, we have a 52-year long, rich tradition of celebrating Juneteenth. We were the first northern city to host a Juneteenth celebration, and we are proud to uphold this legacy. Even in the face of challenges, we remain united, honoring this day and all it represents. While it's a time of celebration, it's also a time of reflection and renewal. As we come together, we must also remember that our work isn't finished. We must remain committed to tackling racial disparities and advocating for justice and equality within our city. This Juneteenth, let's take a moment to acknowledge our journey, appreciate the progress made, and reaffirm our commitment to the cause of justice. We have come far, but we still have a long road to travel. Happy Juneteenth, Milwaukee. As we move forward, let's do so as a united, progressive city, committed to a future where freedom and equality are realities for all. Best Regards, Mayor Cavalier JohnsonJohnson tweeted his Juneteenth joy.
