Message From Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson

It’s Mayor Cavalier Johnson, and I want to show you exactly where I stand:

Actions that undermine civil rights or public trust have no place in our communities.

What we’re witnessing from federal agents across the country is deeply alarming and raises serious concerns about the violation of people’s constitutional rights—I'm getting calls left and right about it.

Let me be very clear: we have had no indication as of yet that ICE is planning to increase their presence in Milwaukee.

During this anxious time, I’m asking Milwaukee residents to stay calm, stay informed, and look out for one another while exercising their First and Fourth Amendment rights peacefully and lawfully.

But I also want you to know that you are not alone. My administration will continue to stand with you, working everyday to protect your rights, support our community partners, and make sure our city remains a place where everyone can feel safe, respected, and supported.

I’m especially grateful for our partners on the ground—nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and local businesses—who are stepping up for our most vulnerable neighbors right now.

[NAME], our ability to to [sic] come together, care for one another, and rise with courage and compassion in even the most difficult times shows the very best of Milwaukee. Today, will you sign our petition to condemn ICE's aggression?

In service,

Mayor Cavalier Johnson

Cavalier Johnson - Juneteenth

Mayor of Milwaukee, Cavalier Johnson, sent the following email on Monday morning:

Friend,

Today, as we celebrate Juneteenth, we remember the path our nation has traveled, honoring those who fought for justice and equality. This day symbolizes not only the end of legal slavery but also marks the beginning of a long fight for equality that continues to this day.

In Milwaukee, we have a 52-year long, rich tradition of celebrating Juneteenth. We were the first northern city to host a Juneteenth celebration, and we are proud to uphold this legacy. Even in the face of challenges, we remain united, honoring this day and all it represents.

While it's a time of celebration, it's also a time of reflection and renewal. As we come together, we must also remember that our work isn't finished. We must remain committed to tackling racial disparities and advocating for justice and equality within our city.

This Juneteenth, let's take a moment to acknowledge our journey, appreciate the progress made, and reaffirm our commitment to the cause of justice. We have come far, but we still have a long road to travel.

Happy Juneteenth, Milwaukee. As we move forward, let's do so as a united, progressive city, committed to a future where freedom and equality are realities for all.

Best Regards,

Mayor Cavalier Johnson
Johnson tweeted his Juneteenth joy. Even after the shooting of 6 teens at a Juneteenth celebration, Johnson still was touting the event. There was gunfire in a crowd of people at the Juneteenth celebration. Six teens were shot. SIX.

That's not glorious.
