Let's Impeach the President

Neil Young has some ideas he wanted to share. Of course, Young decided to express his views through his art.

It just so happens that his artistry manifests itself in a Bush-bashing album called Living With War. Yes, Young created an entire album devoted to his belief that Bush has been a disaster as the president.

One song getting a lot of attention is "Let's Impeach the President."

Young is not worried about a backlash from being so in your face with his political opinions.

He's in the twilight of his career. I wouldn't worry about that sort of thing either if I were in his position.

From Rolling Stone:

While the war certainly remains a divisive topic, it's unlikely that Young is worried about alienating any fans. "There are things that I've done that have been hard for people to get into," Young told Rolling Stone. "They haven't liked everything. They want me to do the same thing over and over, and they think I'm inconsistent and erratic when I don't. That's a very narrow viewpoint, I think."

"I just try to stay open," he added. "I'm happy when I have a new idea, when my music turns a corner."

Suggesting impeachment isn't a new idea.

I'm not saying that Young isn't sincere, but I do think that "impeachment" is the topic du jour among the lib glitterati.

It's being used as a marketing ploy in some cases.

Mention impeachment and get attention.

It's sort of like when all those new "low carb" products were created or "low carb" labels were slapped on old ones, all to capitalize on the high protein diet craze.

I think it comes off as kind of sleazy.

Impeachment talk is guaranteed to get noticed by the lib media. Celebrities and politicians live for publicity and the lib media live for bashing Bush.

It's a symbiotic relationship.

As the veteran rocker explains it, he was finally moved to record the album, "Living With War," in a two-week burst of creativity after his patience with Generation Next ran out.

"I was waiting for someone to come along, some young singer 18 to 22 years old, to write these songs and stand up," Young said. "I waited a long time. Then, I decided that maybe the generation that has to do this is still the '60s generation. We're still here."

The now old man Young couldn't wait for a kid to record a song with the impeachment message, so he felt compelled to do it.

That's kind of...WRONG.

There have been a number of highly critical songs about Bush from twenty somethings. I guess Young just didn't realize that, or he forgot.

Young is right that the '60s generation is still here. Actually, its members are still there. Some from the '60s generation never grew up and out of it.

They're stuck in a time warp, but they like it.

To them, every war is Vietnam, and there's a Watergate around every corner, unless someone like Clinton is in the White House. Then, lies and corruption can be excused, or as Maureen Dowd puts it, "endearing."

The album's explosive centerpiece is "Let's Impeach the President." Over an urgent, guitar-driven backdrop, Young sings:

"Let's impeach the president for abusing all the power we gave him and shipping all our money out the door.

Let's impeach the president for bending the facts to fit their new story of why we have to send our men to war."

To me, those lyrics sound pretty simplistic and boring, melding obvious rhymes while echoing the tired, old Dem talking points.

Young says, "The endgame is, when people hear it, it's up to them to think whatever they want. And I can say whatever I want. We seem to be losing track of that."

I think Young is right about that.

He can say whatever he wants and people can respond to what he has to say.

Free speech is best answered with more free speech.

Young says, "Let's impeach the president."

I say, "Let's not."

And so it goes...
