Obama Afraid of McCain

This is nothing new.

After the field of Dem candidates had narrowed during the primaries, Hillary Clinton kept asking Barack Obama to debate her. He refused.

He used the tired line that there had already been twenty debates. That struck me as an inadequate explanation for his refusal to debate Hillary.

The vast majority of those debates were more like press conferences, with so many participants that each candidate had little time to speak.

Given his fear of debating, I guess it's no surprise that Obama isn't accepting McCain's invitation to a series of town hall meetings.

WASHINGTON -- Democratic candidate Barack Obama on Saturday backed away from rival John McCain’s challenge for a series of joint appearances before the political conventions, agreeing only to the standard three debates in the fall.

In May, when a McCain adviser proposed a series of pre-convention appearances at town hall meetings, Obama said, “I think that’s a great idea.” In summer stumping on the campaign trail, McCain has often noted that Obama had not followed through and joined him in any events.

On Saturday, in a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said the short period between the last political convention and the first proposed debate made it likely that the commission-sponsored debates would be the only ones in the fall.

“We’ve committed to the three debates on the table,” campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Saturday in an interview. “It’s likely they will be the three appearances by the candidates this fall.”

Asked by The Associated Press if that meant Obama would not agree to any other debates, Psaki said, “We’re not saying that.” She said the McCain campaign had rejected Obama’s proposal for two joint town hall meetings.

How lame!

Obama won't participate in town hall meetings with McCain. His spokeswoman says Obama is committed to the three debates scheduled for the fall.

But according to spokeswoman Psaki, the campaign isn't saying that Obama won't agree to other debates.

It sure seems like that's exactly what the Obama campaign is saying.

I think Obama fears McCain.

When Obama tries to think on his feet, he falters. When he goes off script, he screws up. When he's challenged, even by Katie Couric, he loses.

Why do you think Obama won't agree to the town hall meeting thing?

Obviously, he doesn't think he would benefit.

I think this makes Obama look very bad. It makes McCain look stronger.

caleb, your hate is spewing from a place that needs some therapy.

In regards to this post, I think it is a smart move for Obama to avoid town hall meetings with John McCain.

First, why would Obama want to risk his momentum and media coverage on joint events with McCain? That would be like the Rolling Stones agreeing to share the stage with a local bluegrass band.

Second, why would Obama want to share appearances with someone who is using misleading arguments and silly celebrity comparisons in advertising campaigns?

Obama is not afraid of McCain, he is just using good political strategies to win an election.

Come on, "caleb." Your comment is so over the top that it's laughable. You're not for real.

Don't test me. Obama is not a Muslim. And Obama is an American.

I think it's cowardly for Obama to avoid McCain. Looking like a coward isn't a good political strategy in my opinion.
