Bill Maher is trashing America again.
It's as if the only way he thinks he can appear relevant is by making inflammatory statements.
He's right in a way. He doesn't get attention unless he's saying something outrageous.
I think Maher does it to survive, to make a buck, because he's not funny anymore.
Talking to CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Maher delivered his latest desperate attempt to get noticed.

WOLF BLITZER: Do you think she (Sarah Palin) has a future nationally as a presidential candidate?
BILL MAHER: I don't know about a presidential candidate but I would never put anything past this stupid country.

BLITZER: So people are already complaining that you're calling the United States a stupid country and I'm giving you a chance to clarify.
MAHER: I don't need to clarify. It is.
BLITZER: Well, tell me why you think the United States is a stupid country.
MAHER: Because Sarah Palin could be president. I mean, please, do I need to expand on that any more? Uh, yeah, I do. I think this is in general... I mean, it's a big country. That's the great thing about it. There's 300 million people here. So, within this large country, there are tens of millions of very bright, intelligent people, you know, the ones who are watching us, um, not the ones who are writing the emails.
Uh, but, you know, in general, um, gosh, uh, you know, this country just gets dumber and dumber by the day. And uh, I don't think I have time on your show to list all the reasons.
BLITZER: But you, but you... this country did elect Barack Obama president of the United States.
MAHER: Look who he was running against. Yes. I mean, look at the situation. I mean, this was after 8 years of Bush, which was, you know, a pretty much, a disastrous presidency. Uh, John McCain was not a very attractive candidate. And of course, he picked Sarah Palin, uh, to run beside him, and uh, you know, given that choice, I think Americans, you know, came to the fore on that one. But just because they elected a bright guy doesn't mean they're bright.
Good grief.
I ask this with all seriousness: Does Maher have a substance abuse problem?
He really was stumbling all over his words and stuttering. He had to struggle to get out a sentence. He wasn't able to present his thoughts in a coherent manner.
America stupid. Sarah Palin stupid. America stupid. Obama bright. America not bright.
What is that?
I also think it's funny that Maher said the smart Americans were watching him on CNN, not the stupid people who were emailing to complain about his remarks.
But those alleged stupid people had also been watching. Maher is awfully arrogant for someone who doesn't make sense.
Blitzer challenging Maher by arguing that Americans displayed intelligence when they elected Obama is priceless. Bias? What bias?
It was also priceless the way Maher babbled that although Americans "came to the fore" on electing the bright Obama, that's no indication that they're bright.
I strongly object to Maher's assessment that America is stupid. Where does Maher get off saying that? He's no genius. He's just a sad, small man trying to get people to care about what he says.
I don't consider Maher to be controversial. I think he's pathetic. I feel sorry for him.

Boy, I watched some of that last night. Why was this person given so much air time? Do that many people want to hear him go on?? Why doesn't he just move to another country if he hates this one so much?

Lady Di-- I don't know why Wolf Blitzer would give Maher a forum. He's more of a Larry King sort of guest. Blitzer must think that Maher would boost his ratings. That doesn't say much for Blitzer or the state of his ratings.

The way Maher was stumbling around and having difficulty speaking makes me wonder if he was being interviewed while under the influence.
Unless he has a substance abuse problem, I wouldn't think Maher would choose to be on CNN while impaired.

My main point is that Maher says ridiculous things to get attention. That's his shtick now.

Great observation. The fact that people get their news from Maher, Stewart, et al proves how stupid we really are. And listening to these boobs isn't making us any smarter.
He was making this comment directed at people that read "Freedom Eden" Enough said. We need to invest heavily in education and people need to read other more ethical forms of journalism, aside from Freedom Eden and Fox news to get a grasp on the issues. The birthers and the tea bagging wing nuts...those are the stupid Americans he's talking about.
Its not comedians making this great country stupid, its the lack of intelligent debate, its the fact that a man defines his opinion on TV, and instead of using the valid observations to better ourselves, it becomes an outrage among the week minded, then the name calling, and the recommendations of "if you don't like it then live" it would be a lot better for the country if the narrowly, weak minded, "stupid" people left.
America is not stupid but a lot of Americans are I'm sorry to say.
The mere fact that people obsess over TV shows like "John and Kate Plus 8" and dote over the private lives of celebrities is proof enough that something is seriously out of whack.
That TV news is viewed in the minds network executives as "entertainment" and is subject to ratings is another indication of the depths to which we have sunk.
The idiocy of viral emails going around calling the President's citizenship into question and that people believe it. Further proof of the dumbing down of the citizenry.
I could go on and on but if no one can see the stupidity that is omnipresent and oh so prevalent in America today then they must be part of the problem of the stupidity in America.

America is a very stupid country. Most people here can't seem to figure out that it doesn't matter who you vote for or IF you vote because all the choices are completely controlled by the billionaires that pull the strings on both hardly dissimilar parties. Where's the party for the average non-wealthy American? I hear crickets chirping. Where's the party that will give us single payer health care? End the wars for energy resource dominance? Indict the war criminals Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice for authorizing torture and for starting a war of aggression? Actually stand up to the Israeli government? Give basic civil rights to gay folks? Legalize whatever adults want to smoke in the privacy of their own homes? Turn the C.I.A. into strictly an intelligence analyzing organ instead of maintaining it as a covert operations terrorist group that acts in the interests of big businesses? Start paring down the number of comically redundant intelligence agencies in the U.S., now up to the total of sixteen if not more since I last checked? Abolish the Patriot Act? Abolish the Dept. of Fatherland Security? Give us a minimum wage that actually corresponds to the cost of living instead of being an insult to every working person? Give employees the right to easily unionize with the E.F.C.A.? Neither party, or I should say more accurately neither nearly-identical wing of the Big Business Billionaires' Party, is willing to do any of this. Voting in this country is such a waste of time and so artificial that it makes professional wrestling look authentic. Smart Americans save their money and move out of this cesspool of ignorance and boorishness to a more intelligent, more sane country.
