Tina Fey: 24-Year-Old Virgin

I'm creeped out by Tina Fey's recent interview with David Letterman. On national TV, she discusses losing her virginity at 24.

She tells David Letterman she "couldn't give it away."

Given the recent revelations about Letterman's sexual exploits with an intern and other women on his staff, it's particularly awkward.

Although Fey isn't flustered, Letterman sort of squirms as he reads from an US magazine article listing women who were virgins into their 20s.

Fey jokes, "All the other people, that was a choice on their part," pointing out a Victoria's Secret model.

Transcript

DAVID LETTERMAN: But now wait a minute. It says her you, Tina Fey...

TINA FEY: Yes. We don't have to read that.

LETTERMAN: Twenty-four...

FEY: Twenty-four.

LETTERMAN: Twenty-four. Well, there's nothing wrong with that.

FEY: No.

LETTERMAN: Yeah, uh... and...

FEY: Couldn't give it away. Couldn't give it away back then.

LETTERMAN: But the nice, one of the nice parts about that story is I understand that the, the, that the... is your husband.

FEY: Yes. Sure. Yes.

LETTERMAN: And the father of your daughters.

FEY: Yes.

LETTERMAN: So, that's a lovely romantic story there. There's nothing to be embarrassed about by that.

FEY: Good Christian values.

(Laughter)

LETTERMAN: Yes, that's correct. I don't know why people are...

FEY: Or being homely.

LETTERMAN: No, no.

"Good Christian values" are so funny!

Letterman is impressed with how romantic Fey's story is. He's promoting virginity and monogamy. Letterman?

That's so out of character. I feel like Dr. Phil should intervene and provide some analysis.

This doesn't seem like the same Letterman who so brashly joked about Sarah Palin's 14-year-old daughter getting "knocked up by Alex Rodriguez" at a Yankees game.

He sort of apologized once and days later apologized again, a bit more sincerely. He went into a discussion about perception and intent, blah, blah, blah.

It seems that Letterman tends not to get his apologies right the first time around.

That's a pattern with him.

Video.

On this clip, Fey also jokes about the experience of being on the cover of Bazaar and the photo shoot.

She talked about getting made up and wearing long hair extensions.

FEY: When they put all the fans and the wind machine and the lights and all the gay magic, you start thinking like, 'Yeah, I look like this.'

Letterman and the audience laughed at Fey's "gay magic" comment.

I wonder what the reaction would have been if Sarah Palin jokingly said something like that.

I think she'd be charged with hate speech.

Go figure.

Letterman is very long in the tooth - not funny now and I'm not sure he ever was. There is always a mean spirited undertone with David Letterman as if there is some deep seated "dark character" behind the gap-tooth-smile.

He needs to retire to the Hamptons and write his book or something.

I used to be a fan. That ended in the last century, precisely because of that mean-spiritedness.

Although I had grown tired of his shtick before that, I quit Letterman when he went so political during the 2000 election. He was so bitter.

If Letterman would retire, his lifestyle would really change.

Maybe if he left the show but kept an office with a large female staff he could adjust.
