Stephen Hawking: God Didn't Create Universe

Stephen Hawking appears to have done a major flip-flop.

Previously, his writings suggested the existence of God, that ultimately He had a hand in the creation of the universe.

Never mind.

"Spontaneous creation happens."

From Reuters:

God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity.

Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics -- Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles.

His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.

He wrote in A Brief History ... "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God."

In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

My guess is Hawking's new book will be number one on the atheists' best-seller list.

It's as if Hawking is God and God has spoken: God didn't do it.

The atheists will eat up Hawking's book, PROOF THERE IS NO GOD! Time to mock believers. Explain our existence on "spontaneous creation." Something can be created out of nothing according to the laws of physics.

Hawking's assertion that a creator isn't necessary to explain the beginnings of the universe doesn't wipe out faith and belief in God.

He says the law of gravity means the universe can and will create itself.

Who created the law of gravity? Does Hawking address that?

Whatever. He's selling books.

Recently, Hawking has come up with some rather startling views.

From the Daily Mail:

Professor Hawking has been quite outspoken in recent months over a number of issues.

In April documentary series, he argued that it is 'perfectly rational' to assume intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe.

And in an extraordinary series of assertions, he said Earth might be at risk from what he imagines to be 'massive ships' which could try to colonise our planet and plunder our resources.

Professor Hawking said: 'We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet.

'I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet.

'Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.'

It would be 'too risky' to attempt to make contact with alien races, he concluded.

'If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.'

And last month Professor Hawking has warned that unless the human race colonises space within two centuries it will disappear forever.

He said that our only chance for long-term survival is to move away from Earth and begin to inhabit far-flung planets.

In an interview with the website Big Think, Professor Hawking said he was an optimist but the next few hundred years had to be negotiated carefully if humans were to survive.

Hawking has his theories.

If aliens visit us, arriving in massive ships, they might try to colonize earth and plunder our resources.

Hawking warns we need to colonize space in two centuries or the human race is doomed.

Yeah, well. Keep watching the skies for those massive ships.

In the meantime, have a good Thursday. God bless.

The Lost (& Stephen Hawking)

To break the restriction of a linear time sequence, the Lost need empirical data - uncorrupted, honest data. However, the Lost have filtered all their data with a scientific-religious presumption: a finite universe with a finite number of dimensions.

The Lost do not understand, nor do they perceive their conflict with the infinite Universe and the infinite number of dimensions...

"...nothing can be added to it,
nor anything taken from it..."
(Ecclesiastes 3:14)
